The West was never really that important to the South's strategy. The plan was always to capture Washington.
1. The Confederates win at Gettysburg and the Yanks retreat to Washington.
2. The South lays siege to Washington with an uncontested supply chain up through the Shenandoah valley.
3. The Confederacy is recognized by France and the UK.
4. Napoleon III enters the war on the side of the South.

Very possibly so, but the French were dying to get a new foothold in North America during this period and had no qualms about the slavery thing.

Right, that's the whole point. If Lee could have gotten a good siege of Washington going, they might have thought they wouldn't have to. None of these theories are original to me.

Lee wins a decisively at Gettysburg, and you may have seen Union willpower crumble and a peace negotiated. That was the Confederacy's best chance for a win.

We went to Gettysburg last summer.....incredible experience. The battlefield is massive and circles the entire town. We took a whole day and I felt rushed. I definitely need to get back in the near future.

Yeah, I went there one time in August, and another time right after Labor Day. The crowds were gone, but it was still a hot, humid day, not unlike the three days of the battle. Pretty moving experience walking around the field with few other people there.

I hope you're only talking about the northern side. All the confederate soldiers who died were nothing but a bunch of rampaging racists, each of which who owned 50 slaves each and laid the groundwork for the KKK by passing out confederate flags.

This is a decent read with a lot of info packed into a small space. Keep in mind while reading that Lincoln was an attorney for some of the railroads before he became president. He was also an attorney for shipping companies, against a few railroads.
He was a racist and felt that blacks were inferior to whites. He was also a brilliant politician with a knack for being able to weigh all sides and see what opinion would triumph.
