Within ten years all you will see is a memorial to the fallen union soldiers in a battle against an unspoken enemy.

On this day in 1863, my great, great grandfather was captured at Vicksburg. He wad in the 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery.

I really don't know why they mark Pickett's charge as a the high mark. Even if they had won at Gettysburg it wouldn't haven't meant much. The Army of the Potomac would have retreated to Washington and Vicksburg would still be lost. The whole Gettysburg campaign was for null.

Wouldn't have mattered - if the ground wasn't favorable, the Union leaders had enough of Lee's sorcery - they would not have made another Burnside-simple, suicidal assault, like they did at Fredericksburg (as, ironically, Lee would make the next day), nor would they underestimate Lee's ability to maneuver as they had done a few months before at Chancellorsville.

The battle was incredibly costly to both armies and would have been, regardless of the battle's winner - the Union had replacements in the pipeline - the Confederate army never regained the combat power they lost in Pennsylvania over the first 3 days of July 1863.

The only way the South could have won the war at that point was to have caught the AotP in the open - THEN, a decisive battle and Union rout might have been the catalyst for terms with Washington.

Otherwise? It was all over but the final casualties and exact date of the end.

I believe the theory was that Lee would be able to roll up the Union Army all the way to Washington. That was the hope at least.
