Did ten years enlisted, going on 8 years as an Officer (Navy). Def go the Officer route. If you need to enlist, find the quickest way to a commission.

I love the lifestyle. Lots of moving/traveling, jobs are usually fulfilling. It has the same downsides as a normal job would though... dozen shitty leaders for every good one, etc.

I’d like to thank each and every Patriot in here for their service and for their support of our beautiful Commander in Chief.

I joined the US Army one year after I graduated HS. Getting to meet your countrymen in that egalitarian context is amazing. It has been 20 years since I joined, and I still miss those retards. The only reason I use Facebook is to keep up with them. Many went on to become great things. My old 19D SGT is now an ER doctor, my former driver/roommate is now a high school vice principal.
It was a great decision. I became a better person with better values. The GI bill allowed this lower middle class dude get a bachelor's degree and get a job I love, own a home and have never been in debt.

^This.

Active duty 22 years after doing enlisted time in the guard during college. I just graduated from the Army War College and should be promoted to COL in a few months. It is a great place to start, and if you do not mind the hard work you will do alright in the end.

BTW, I am driving to Medford, OR, tomorrow from JBLM, WA. Southern Oregon is beautiful.

There any surprised when you joined that you didn't know? Fields you'd recommend to research. Questions I should ask the recruiter I wouldn't think of? How much do you travel stateside and throughout the country?

Probably my one regret. If I had it to do over, I would have joined - probably AF. I could have seen the world and had more of a chance to get my shite together before going to college. Too old now.

Slight hijack.

Is it possible for someone in their 30’s with a college degree to join a branch? I’m never going to do it but there are moments when I’d entertain enlisting.

Then you'd die. That's why draft dodging is always the smart choice.

My rack mate at USMC OCS was 32. You need an age waiver but it can absolutely be done

Short answer is yes, especially if you have a critical skill like medicine or nursing, or fluency in certain languages. If you're Joe off the street, more difficult but still not impossible.

The other answers are accurate.

It also REALLY depends what branch. Marine Corps OCS and TBS would be hell on earth for someone in their 30s. The workload and recovery time is just too much for our old bodies (military age speaking).

The other branches’ OCS/OTS would more realistic for someone in their 30s to complete.

Joined the Army in 1997 after high school as an information systems operator/analyst. My MOS was 74B at the time but they changed it to 25B a year or so after I got out. I work as an IT consultant now and work from home most of the time. I don't think I would have the career I have had I not enlisted.

Maybe if I did it over again I'd probably go Navy and be a submariner like my father and uncle. They were both FTBs on SSBNs and my uncle went warrant after he made chief. My father ended up getting out for a year and going Army doing 21 years total. Got to wear his dolphins and deterrent patrol pin in class A uniform. He did have a CO once give him shite about it but it's authorized.
