The whole time we thought he was the coward of the county. It turns out he just didn’t need to prove it twice.

Yeah, I developed an interest in genealogy too late. Lots of questions my grandparents could have answered, that I’ll never know. Paternal grandfather went to LSU from 1936-38, after Huey had amped it up. Dad is 82, so I try to ask him stuff whenever we are together.

My great uncle was married 5 times. When he was flying to Los Angeles from Atlanta he told me that he and the stewardess got along so well that they got off the plane in Vegas and got married.
He said they went to a hotel and when he woke the next morning that she was gone and so was his wallet.

I knew that an uncle was a partner in a drilling mud company and that it grew a lot in the 1970's before they sold it. I found out from a friend who tried to hire one of his salesmen because he was so successful that it was because of a deal with EWE when he ran for governor. One of my uncle's partners made a deal with EWE where they supplied two twin engine planes, one for Edwards and his staff, the other for the press corps to ride for free. In exchange they were given a percentage of the oil wells drilled on state leases to supply drilling fluids to. The great salesman was merely going into Texaco, Exxon, etc... planning rooms to pick which wells to supply.. 1970s had a lot of drilling in state waters offshore.
The company was sold to a Houston entity before EWEs second term ended. The great salesman became convenience store clerk. One of the drilling company partners died before the company was sold. Two partners went bankrupt with deals during EWE's 3rd term as governor. My uncle lost most of his money in a real estate tax shelter in Houston in the mid 80's Oil Bust.

It's amazing what you find when digging into your genealogy. I've been working on mine for the better part of 25 years. The one interesting thing that's come up is that my 1st cousin 3x removed was part of the lynch mob that killed Leo Frank in 1915. After that he served two terms in the state legislature and spent 8 years as mayor of Marietta, Georgia.

My Mom told me one of her ancestors played for the Green Bay Packers. This was in the early years when playing pro ball was a Sat/Sun second job in the fall months and you went back to your first job on Monday morning.

My dad's company set up multiple evacuation routes in case of an invasion:
-They kept multiple planes gassed up and ready to go. Jump on a plane and get out of the country.
-If you couldn't make it to the airport, they had boats ready to bring families to the offshore rigs.
-If you couldn't make it to the port, there were helicopters ready to bring people to the oil rigs.
I believe the last ditch evacuation plan was to caravan across the desert to either Oman or Saudi where people would be waiting to bring families to the nearest embassy.
I found all this out later in life as I was very young at the time.

I can imagine that back in the day there were quite a few big, strong country farm baws that could have gone to college on athletic scholarships. Priorities at home helping run the farm came first and it never was an issue at the time.

Evidently, my aunt might be only my half-aunt.
My grandfather served under Patton. Patton was still at Fort Benning early 1941. Patton was out West in the US desert early 1942 (when I think my grandfather from Nebraska probably joined up with his war office).
My aunt's birthday was December 1941. My grandmother was French. And very Catholic.
The genealogy book lists my grandfather as her father. But it wasnt until the second half of my life that my dad said something (after my aunt's passing). I never really thought through the dates in my head. I never questioned why my cousin was 6'7" and I was just under 6' (my mom's side of the family had brothers ranging from 6'7" to 6'1" so I just thought height was a little more random).
Unfortunately, I dont even know where my grandfather met my grandmother. Was it the French North African campaign in 1942? Reaching France a month after DDay in 1944? I know that it was one of the officer's parties. But that is the extent of it.
I was able to spend a lot of time with my grandfather in my 20s and get a lot of stories about his past. But he never brought up the war and neither did I.
