My thoughts...regardless of the defense system, it would be next to impossible to counter all 500,000 artillery shells in an hour barrage.

Virtually every territorial conquest in history was based solely or primarily on economic interests. Sure, there were ancillary issues with many, but most of those were pretexts. In 99% of cases, conquerors want the resources associated with the land - in some cases the inhabitants were also considered resources, in other, they were considered burdens.
But economics drives aggression since the stone age, baw. Your analysis, respectfully, is a truism.
