what was rice fields when I was stationed there in 1976 are now filled with apartment blocks...the North Korean Army is going to come to a complete and grinding halt well north of Seoul....
then it's B-52 time!!!!
and that's not taking into consideration what's going to happen when the NKs start looting their first Walmart!!!!

Who said anything about the north winning?

Hell, China's economic ties with South Korea almost make me think that they would be on South Korea's side in any armed conflict.
At best they might remain on the sidelines. But to side with South Korea?

Right. Because it will be our lives, our money. All S. Korea has to do is call in big brother and we'll crank up the ole war machine.

Think about the economics. Why would China assist North Korea? Because of some mutual defense treaty that was signed over 50 years ago? Meanwhile China and the ROK just signed a free trade agreement and has seen rising levels of trade growth over these past years.
China benefits from a protected and unhurt South Korea.

Huh? Do you think they're like Europe where they rely on the US for defense while spending all their money on a huge welfare state?

for China, politics trumps all. I'm not saying they'd for sure save the North's nuts in a war. They could possibly side it out. But one thing is for sure, there's no way they'd actually side with and help the South if war ever came between the North & South.

I disagree. In China, in 2015, money and wealth trump all. Politics is just a way to manipulate the system in order to garner more wealth.

Are you retarded or just ignorant of the fact that the Korean War was 60+ years ago?
Pretty sure the doctrine and technology changes would imply different results to a thinking person. YMMV.

I don't think he was implying the North would conquer the South if another war broke out, just that it would be a very bloody and nasty affair.

We have over 30k troops in South Korea and over 8,000 are combat troops, so yes We would fight their war. In 2014, during a previous scare the US rushed more tanks and troops to Korea.

It would not be pretty. They have a population of almost 25 million who have been brainwashed into thinking their leader is godlike. They've got a massive, albeit mostly obsolete military that outnumbers almost 2 to 1 the combined forces of the US & South Korea on the peninsula. And if it ever came to war, there's a good chance that China would eventually be sucked in to save their arse so there's the whole issue of it expanding into World War III. And on top of that, they've got the bomb and they're almost assuredly crazy enough to use it.
Will this affect the warranty on my Samsung TV?

That's a drop in the bucket compared to the contribution the South puts up for their own defense. They've got over 600,000 men in uniform with close to another 3 million in reserve. As for tanks, they, unlike many other allies of ours, have plenty of their own. And I'm not talking about tanks we gave them. The South Koreans make a good deal of their own military hardware, including their own tanks that they produce themselves.

Correct.
However, in an event of war the US would still be the bell cow.

We'd play a major role for sure. But the lion's share of fighting the war on the ground would fall to the ROK soldiers themselves. The only way this would change is if the war dragged on for a long time. Which I don't see that happening.

I do agree with you there. North Korea wouldn't make it very far. I think the population of the Seoul metro area equals the entire population of North Korea. Good luck trying to pacify that city...if they even clear the DMZ.

Could you imagine MacArthur trying to fight a war in the 21st century? I think his head would explode like that scene in Scanners.

Do south Koreans have private gun ownership? Would the North Koreans just mow down the civilians? Not sure they would be worried about occupying the city as much as total annihilation of the south. With a land mass so small what kind of logistics come into play for the south actually being able to move hardware to the north with the millions of refugees fleeing the front line? This is a very interesting situation for sure. Also will China start ruffling feathers if we encroach on their territory to conduct military strikes?

I'd worry more about someone like China getting involved.

No. They're pretty restrictive. However, I believe ROK has mandatory military service, so the people are trained on how to use them.
