NOPD spokesman Andy Cunningham told Gambit in a statement, "Eighth District officers asked members of a brass band playing in the street to move to the sidewalk in order to allow traffic to pass and to not block the entrance to a nearby business. At that time, a member of the band later identified as Eugene Grant struck one of the officers in the chest with his instrument, damaging the officer’s body-worn camera. "After striking the officer with his instrument, Grant refused repeated requests by both officers and citizens to calm down, forcing the officers to detain Grant until backup arrived. Grant was arrested for obstructing public passages and resisting an officer."
Let's hope the camera was rolling. Shut these frickers up.

That band has been a pain in the arse on that corner for a few years now.
You want to play on the street? Get a fricking permit like everyone else.
I don't see how anyone supports this shite.

The city needs to allow the NOPD to conduct details at these music establishments

Yes.
They can't stand the consent decree.
Let's go back to the old days of kicking arse. Criminals don't fear NOPD like they used to.

That band plays there a lot with no issues. I wonder what changed for the shop owner?

New Orleans is completely out of control. The level of stupidity these people in the video show is unbelievable. I would venture to say most read, write and speak on a 3-4th grade level. The guy videoing says out here trying to make and honest living, no your not you are a panhandler with a musical instrument. You can keep the FQ and at this point you can pretty much have the whole damn city

New Orleans musicians are planning a rally and a second line for Sunday afternoon, starting in Jackson Square and ending at 600 Frenchmen St. — the spot where the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) arrested brass band musician Eugene Grant last week. “The event on Sunday is less of a protest than a support march,” said Megan Kiefer, a lawyer representing Grant, who is helping secure permits for the rally. The rally was born out of an outcry among the musicians' community and their supporters after videos went viral on social media showing Grant’s arrest. The videos show crowds of people at the corner of Frenchmen and Chartres streets on Monday, July 8 — watching and shouting as Grant is handcuffed by two officers on the ground. Witnesses told Gambit they saw between 10 and 15 officers at the scene.
Hope they have a permit
