try to get a teenager a drivers license now. it requires three different steps, each step costs $$, to eventually get the kid a drivers license
AND when the kid gets that license, your insurance goes up. Way up if that kid is a *ahem* "male".

Then you have the money grab of continuing education for professions where licensure makes sense like engineering. Every two years you basically pay ridiculous prices for conferences or online classes so you can collect a certificate and renew your license.

But you don't need a license to be a politician

But any a-hole can have a kid.

A lot of professional jobs do this to protect their own interests. So people advertising themselves as something, are what they say they are.

Ready for this? HVAC doesn’t require a license in Louisiana. All I’m required to have is a Freon handling certification. Kinda makes you day hmmmmmm now doesn’t it.
Correct me if I'm wrong here... You are only talking about the technicians or companies that do small jobs. Mechanical contractor licenses are required for anyone doing work of $10k on commercial or $7,500 for residential.

A subcontractor who wishes to bid or perform commercial work where the total cost of the project including labor and materials for the following must be licensed with this Board:
-$50,000 or more for major and specialty classifications
-$10,000 or more for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing
-$1 or more for hazardous
A subcontractor who wishes to bid or perform residential work (new construction) where the total cost of the project including labor and materials in the amount of $7,500 or more must be properly licensed with this Board.

As a former repossession agent. That one is a total money grab. Not that the idea to have well-informed people taking your car know the laws, but there is 0..I MEAN 0 enforcement by these people. It only applies in lawsuits for the most part

Compare that to Texas. There is no license or designation at the State level to be a General Contractor. You do have to be licensed/registered to pull a permit at the local level, and you MUST have an assurance bond in place.

Texas Wins! They have 94 occupations that require a state license. That’s after eliminating 26 in 2017.

you DEFINITELTY don't want this, competing interests between public and industry

Eh... Some industry SROs do a pretty decent job... FINRA for example. The amount of paperwork to stay in compliance with them is absurd. However if all of that was regulated by the SEC it would be double or triple the amount of paperwork. Govt would probably try to prosecute people that made honest mistakes instead of allowing firms to make the customer whole and handling disciplinary action internally or case by case basis.

Service Technicians yes. New installation/construction you do need a license or someone with one to work under. But to get a job in Louisiana with any company all you need is the Universal handling certificate which is no more than $75 open book test.

Yes, in Georgia it is also like this. I imagine it is all states. In Georgia I think there's more than 67.
