I know the OP will get trashed by the OT. But it’s not a bad idea.
My wife and I are both MD’s and told our kids we did not intend to pay for college unless it was a good investment.
If they want to be an engineer and can maintain a 3.75 gpa, I would gladly pay for a state 4 year college.
Under no circumstance would I pay for an out of state school. It offers no benefit
You realize you sound like a huge prick here right? So you are both MD's and have an income over $300k and likely over $400k but you won't pay for college unless your kid wants to be an engineer or better with a fantastic gpa?
I agree that generally speaking out of state doesn't make any sense, but there are plenty of times when it makes a lot of sense actually. For instance if you want to get into politics, going to school in DC would have some incredible benefits over being in Troy Alabama. Or if you live in Tennessee and want to be a marine biologist.
i get what you are saying, but starting off with the MD part and good investment then you should have more than enough money to help your kids and not have to be a tight wad so you can buy that $600k RV in retirement or 3rd vacation condo in Aspen.

This isn't necessary. People have different philosophies on this and both sides have good points. I was expected to finance my own education and I feel better for it. I'm taking the same approach with my kids.
Bingo. Although I plan on paying half of my kid’s tuition. No parent is obligated to pay for their kid’s college. What an asinine philosophy.

I thought it said college...oh wait
Uh, like I said, I took out 4 years of student loans and I'm doing just fine. The payments are insignificant. I don't understand how having some loans to pay off is such a "burden?"

Not sure what the hell that means.
It means you sound like one of those dads who would rather be a superhero instead of letting your kids learn some lessons the hard way.

Wow a lot of assumptions there.
..But I’m in my 30s, and I agree, college is more but not much more. I had parents who guided me into being a good highschool student ( value in that) TOPs was a big part of this with most of my LSU education paid for. (Again value by my parents, high school counselor, and state)
But I had a lot of help.... guidance, discipline, food, shelter.. I did not go without.. I’m very lucky, but when it came to tuition, I paid myself ( working during this time). It’s worked out well. Harder you work, usually the “luckier” you get.

Truly great thread. Having said that, boys or girls? If boys. frick college. Do you know how much worth a shite plumbers make? They start out working part time as a helper in hs. Journeyman status real quick. Easily can parlay that into a nice career if done correctly.
I really missed my calling by going to school.

A big family is the biggest blessing there could be.

I'm reminded of a line from the movie "Soul Man". In turning down C. Thomas Howell's character for financial aid, the Harvard Law School financial aid worker tells him, "We help people whose parents are poor, not people whose parents are a$$holes."

He didn't say how many kids. I have a buddy that has 5 and I couldn't imagine the college costs. Honestly, LSU tuition for my daughter wouldn't be a huge issue for us. We aren't rich but her 6th grade costs about the same. More with aftercare actually.

This thread should just be a reminder to try and save 20% always. Put at least 15% to retirement and 5% or more to savings. It's a huge chunk, without a doubt and not easy at all. It takes a great deal of determination, hard work, and saying no.

He isnt offering any help either
This isnt help like he thinks it is.
Help with scholarships? wtf is that
Help with a trade school? So does that mean he will pay for that?
Loans? How are you helping there? "Oh hey here is where you can get a loan and go into debt. Good luck"

Nah it’s a reminder that owners can’t grow because they can’t hire people. Why can’t they hire people? Because future plumbers are in college accruing debt with no major

Add up how much money would pay for all of their college. Give them each half of that. They can start small businesses with that much money, be their own bosses, learn how it all really works, and bypass the bullshite. They could potentially become successful entrepreneurs, but even if they fail trying, those lessons and connections would be worth more than most college educations.
Or they can piss it away and head to the school of hard knocks and regret. Those are valuable lessons, too.
Or they can put it towards real school and get a job to help them get through, learning valuable lessons both ways.

For a board that bitches about millennials, there are a shite ton of you acting like he owes a college education to his kids.
FTR, I paid for all my own school without a dime of help from my parents and 0 student loans. I also don’t hate my parents.
