we received one as a gift for christmas and i filled up a 20gal propane tank and we ran it full blast for probably an hour or so every night for a week.
propane = gone.
does this sound about right? that seemed awfully short to me. i didnt turn off the tank each time and i'm thinking maybe it was slow leaking.

That's fast. If I were to guess I would say typically 30 hours. That's how long mine typically last.

Was the tank from one of those pre-filled swap things? If so the tank was more than likely not fully filled.

You should probably shut the tank each time.

Heaters will run through some propane with the quickness. Much faster than say, a grill.

I would turn off the tank after each use, but yes those heaters run through propane. 30 hours of use seems about right to me.

They only fill to 15lbs and says it on the labels of the tanks. In many cases the tanks are even less than that.

My bad 20lb tank not 20gal.
I get it refilled at ace so I hope they're topping it off.

Word....used to exchange tanks at Academy all the time...caught onto their scheme and ended up "exchanging" my 3 obsolete tanks for new ones...just to get even..ya know !

you are paying by the lb.
This sounds about right. We have an outside fireplace, and we will get about 6-8 hours out of a tank at full blast. What we do is run it full blast for 10-15 mins, then turn it down a bit.

i don't think a 20 gallon tank would fit in those tall thingies.
