re: The state sanctioned mafia known as River Pilots are shaking down the chemical industry

Then go to a maritime school, spend years working up through the ranks, pick a port in Florida, for instance, and beat out all other applicants for a spot. Port Everglades pilots make more money and arguably have one of the easiest pilots routes in the world. Unfortunately you just probably can't become a pilot in Louisiana. Doesn't mean being a pilot is unattainable

Geez, I wonder why?
Remote piloting systems are already being used in some inland waters and ports in Europe.

I would think if this is a state governed and sponsored industry, all it would take is a qualified trained individual that applied and was turned down...
Then file a discrimination lawsuit with the end result being a publishable metric of the qualifications for employment. Combine that with a career path.

Uhh yea, more competition and less nepotism would be a good thing. No 8 ball needed, though I'm sure you've been selling some to the crew members.

I've not seen anyone insinuate as much. Just that nepotism in the the workplace is generally unfair to other qualified applicants.
You come across as someone who is realizing the word is out on an industry where generally you tell each other to "shh". There's really not a plausible argument for the nepotism, besides what has been quoted and posted. And those answers are garbage-plain and simple.

Would it? Is that what the magic 8 ball says?
You've got to be retarded or trolling... or a communist.
Do you want nepotism to be the guiding factor in the surgeon working on your child's brain?
Do you want nepotism to be the guiding factor in WHO builds the boats you GUIDE up and down the river?
That's frickin absurd to think that various colleges and trade schools along the MS River couldn't develop 2-4 yr accredited programs that would yield 500 qualified pilots a year that would kick your asses in day to day jobs for 1/3 the salary.

With pilots on the ships and pilots in the on shore control room. Congrats, you just doubled the amount of pilots it takes to navigate a ship

Because of the nepotism.
And that's a huge problem and a microcosm of this backwards arse State.

No one is suggesting that. We're simply pointing out that a little more competition and a little less nepotism would be a good thing.

Yes, it would. Competition is always good. You a socialist?

They do.
I've mentioned this before in these threads and it's always overlooked.
Representing 1% of shipping costs doesn't mean a damn thing without context.
Furthermore, being overpaid isn't the discussion that is happening here. We're talking about the nepotism and lack of competition.

The first thing that comes to mind is a situation similar to the Snell Family in Ozark. I wonder if these guys are running drugs or arms through the ports, and that's why they have to keep it in the family.

Remote systems will replace some pilots and displace others.

The funniest part of this thread is the fact that the article is a farce to begin with. The shipping industry is moving billions of dollars annually thru the Mississippi river. You think they really care about paying a few peanuts to get their cargo safely thru port. Pilot fees probably represent less than 1% of their shipping costs
Do you realize how ignorant/corrupt/stupid you sound?

That's pretty much exactly what happened. Went to the supreme court and they basically sanctioned nepotism in their hiring practices.

So youre taking the pilots off of the ships and putting them in a room. How is this reducing the amount of pilots needed?
