re: The state sanctioned mafia known as River Pilots are shaking down the chemical industry

But the only reason ship pilots are even necessary is because the ship captains lack the local knowledge to navigate inland waterways like the pilot does. Once an airline pilots learns his craft, it stands to reason he can land on a runway anywhere. A maritime pilot gets paid for their specific knowledge. That knowledge is not interchangeable in ports anywhere else in the world.

Modern technology has made them far less valuable

The funniest part of this thread is the fact that the article is a farce to begin with. The shipping industry is moving billions of dollars annually thru the Mississippi river. You think they really care about paying a few peanuts to get their cargo safely thru port. Pilot fees probably represent less than 1% of their shipping costs

I use that modern technology every day and it certainly helps but it doesn't render pilots obsolete. And its not always ad reliable as one would think

Care to explain this.
What specifically on a ship made in the last 20 years or so would make it far more easier to get from baton rouge to the mouth of the river?

I can vouch for that.
Damned ole Googley Maps often sent me to the wrong address when delivering pizza.

These ships are burning 20+ tons of fuel every day but these idiots think the chemical industry is worried about paying a couple grand to get the fricking ship out to the gulf

Autopilot that connects to terabytes of weather/water conditions combined with terabytes of sonar data combined with terabytes of data from other vessels' gps systems.
DUHHHH

Value of your life to Airlines
Time article I just found. They don't value your life.
So still about a half billion in "cargo" on a typical U.S. flight.
FYI, most VSL's are about $10MM/life for Americans.

No one is suggesting that. We're simply pointing out that a little more competition and a little less nepotism would be a good thing.

It certainly doesn't make them more valuable.

They do.
I've mentioned this before in these threads and it's always overlooked.

Pay me even half that and I'll gladly cover my own mileage.

Nah. we just want the career to be more fairly attainable for qualified individuals, you pompous cockmonkeys.

Not to mention autopilot is forbidden in inland waters of the US

Yea. NO shite. That was facetious but you aren't a 'computer nerd' like me so it may have whiffed.
I still make 1/4 of your salary. So you can make fun of me.
