This reminds me of the Carl Icahn story of firing 3 floors of people after they couldn’t clearly explain what they did for the company he had taken over. He kept expecting things to fall apart afterwards, but things actually got better.

I can assure you there is no shortage of ads on Twitter right now. I just blocked five promoted accounts in less than ten minutes of looking at my timeline.
A favorite pastime of mine is blocking ad/promoted accounts on Twitter. I have a zero tolerance policy. I don't care if it is my own mother advertising with them, it gets blocked. I have quite the curated list of blocked accounts that is probably near 1,000 now. Everything from Ford, Chevy, and Apple to Knob Creek, Jack Daniels, and the Republican party. If it pops up in my feed as an ad, it gets blocked. I even blocked Pop Tarts.
