New “Golden” Ratios for Facial Beauty

In four experiments, we tested the existence of an ideal facial feature arrangement that could optimize
the attractiveness of any face given its facial features. Participants made paired comparisons of
attractiveness between faces [men and women] with identical facial features but different eye-mouth distances and
different interocular distances. We found that although different faces have varying attractiveness,
individual attractiveness is optimized when the face’s vertical distance between the eyes and the
mouth is approximately 36% of its length, and the horizontal distance between the eyes is
approximately 46% of the face’s width.

These “new” golden ratios match those of an average face.

This averageness, refers to how similar a face looks to most other faces in a population. Average, here, does not mean “so-so.” Rather, average faces are a mathematical average (or mean) of most people’s features. And, in general, people find such faces quite attractive.

Now, your boy Pecker is a handsome dude. We already know this. But I wanted to see what science had to say. So I dropped a photo of myself in Microsoft Visio, drew lines over my face, and ran da numbers. And while my numbers are very good (incredibly good some might say) they aren't perfect, so I'll have to look inside myself and deal with that, as a man. How you deal with your numbers is up to you.



That said, don't fret if your numbers tell you you're that thing outa the Goonies. Some people fall outside of the optimal range and are still considered attractive. Take for instance Angelina Jolie. Her numbers are pretty weird, but she's still considered very attractive. So you might be an Angelina Jolie type, or you might be fugly. Either way, it's what's inside that counts. Unless you're attractive, then the outside counts too.
