The Robots That Are Taking Over Your Food Delivery

Technology is removing the humans in an effort to make restaurant delivery faster and better

Robots are carting fried chicken through Chicago streets. Drones are parachuting Panera strawberry lemonade down to homes in Charlotte, N.C. AI-powered scales at fast-food restaurants are making sure delivery orders that go out aren’t missing burgers.
Billions of dollars in investment and years of research are going into efforts to fix a modern convenience: food delivery.
Restaurants in the U.S. receive around 4 billion food-delivery orders a year through apps alone, according to data insights company Consumer Edge. But hungry customers often end up disappointed. Couriers juggle multiple deliveries, resulting in cold burritos. Drinks are spilled, fries are shorted. Delivery charges grow ever higher, as do suggested tips and menu prices.
Enter robotics companies, which have received around $3.5 billion in investment since 2019 in an effort to make food delivery better, faster and cheaper, according to research provider PitchBook.
quote:
Drone companies such as Zipline and Wing are putting their autonomous aircraft to use in food delivery, promising service in a fraction of the time needed by a car or bike. Workers are learning to load drones parked outside restaurants in docks or at charging “nests” that house fleets at shopping plazas.
The drone uses GPS along with sensors to target a precise point at a customer’s property. Traveling at around 150 to 300 feet in the air, the drone then lowers a tether toward its target containing the food order, using its sensors to navigate to the ground. It alerts the customer, deposits the food package and goes on its way.
quote:
Zipline expects customers to pay around $7 to $10 for its drone delivery services, on top of the meal price. All charges are included in that price—and the drone doesn’t ask for a tip, Zipline says. They also don’t mind flying in rain and snow. “They operate in gnarly weather,” Cliffton says.

The technology companies that made the gig economy necessary for many to make ends meet is now working hard to eliminate the gig economy in the name of efficiency.
Where does it end.

We will hit a point in society where you will need authorization from the government to have children in order to lower the population but the finality will be test tube babies much like the societal makeup of Brave New World.

Robots only do what they’re told.

You won’t be subjugated to robots. You’ll be subjugated to the satanic hyper elite that control them.

And you don't have to tip robot delivery drivers, and they won't spit on your food... maybe..

Do we tip them with batteries?

Unfortunately, a lot of what made the gig economy worth it is now out of the gig economy. I do Rover and the amount of people that attempt to use Rover as their job is absolutely insane. I miss the days when AirBnB was someone who had an extra room, and would love to do that with my house but people nowadays just expect everything under the sun and a shite ton of Boomers ruined it by buying houses purely to rent out.
A lot of gig jobs were never designed to be full time jobs, yet people ruined it for all of us by having the government force that.

Not good delivery, but in the same realm. We took our son to Monster Jam last month. The concession stands still had workers taking your order/handing you food but you then put everything on a tray under a camera. The POS system recognized everything you were getting and rang it up for you to pay.

I got a Walmart delivery the other day and a cute former acquaintance of mine delivered it. I gave her an extra $20 tip the next morning, just so she knows I was thinking about here.

Efficiency in the new age of automate and AI everything is scary. Perhaps I am too short sighted to see how this doesn’t differ from the Industrial Revolution or any other new technology that did away with old jobs and created new ones, but this feels like new jobs get made that humans are not needed to work. Or at least far fewer are needed than what was replaced.

That's kind of neat.
Took me a second though to read that as Point of Sale instead of Piece of shite, tho!
