Couriers juggle multiple deliveries, resulting in cold burritos. Drinks are spilled, fries are shorted. Delivery charges grow ever higher, as do suggested tips and menu prices.
Enter robotics companies, which have received around $3.5 billion in investment since 2019 in an effort to make food delivery better, faster and cheaper, according to research provider PitchBook.

Unfortunately, a lot of what made the gig economy worth it is now out of the gig economy. I do Rover and the amount of people that attempt to use Rover as their job is absolutely insane. I miss the days when AirBnB was someone who had an extra room, and would love to do that with my house but people nowadays just expect everything under the sun and a shite ton of Boomers ruined it by buying houses purely to rent out.
A lot of gig jobs were never designed to be full time jobs, yet people ruined it for all of us by having the government force that.

Not good delivery, but in the same realm. We took our son to Monster Jam last month. The concession stands still had workers taking your order/handing you food but you then put everything on a tray under a camera. The POS system recognized everything you were getting and rang it up for you to pay.

I got a Walmart delivery the other day and a cute former acquaintance of mine delivered it. I gave her an extra $20 tip the next morning, just so she knows I was thinking about here.

Efficiency in the new age of automate and AI everything is scary. Perhaps I am too short sighted to see how this doesn’t differ from the Industrial Revolution or any other new technology that did away with old jobs and created new ones, but this feels like new jobs get made that humans are not needed to work. Or at least far fewer are needed than what was replaced.
