You can still ask beforehand instead of the guy who waits a month to ask if he gets any bump in pay. That’s just absurd to me. What are my new responsibilities? What is my new pay? Those should be your first questions, not a month later.
I’m witnessing said situation now. The employee wasn’t given any time to think about it. It was the only option given. Either take it, or be replaced. The problem is that there is no way to fight it. None of us can afford to lose our jobs without something lined up. Either take it or you’re done. And the owner knows this so he takes advantage.

difficulty lies in explaining why your minimal time with the new title qualifies you for the better job
If you can't do this you didn't prep thoroughly to interview. I'm not much of a salesman and I could sell this with no prep time.

This is why more and more people today achieve a raise in pay by either leaving or threatening to leave their current job.
Which is why I laugh at all of the old timers that talk about "loyalty" and staying with the same employer for 30+ years.
You're worth what the market will pay you.

You millennials are always wanting something for nothing. Even if I did give you a raise you’d just waste it on fort night and vape pens

The guy I was working under got moved to a new position. I wasn't asked if I wanted the promotion, they just came in and basically said you're in charge now and these are your additional responsibilities. Like someone else mentioned, I wasn't given much of a choice. I waited to see if they were going to bring up money. After a month is when I approached them about it. The way I look at is, I work my arse off to prove myself to earn the raise, or at the very least I learn new skills that will help me a new company. I'm actually fine with the set up.

New fancy title = more money at the next company

Say thanks. Then immediately upon securing new job, leave.

I've always felt it's important to try and keep your salary in line with your title.
Doesn't do any good on the future job market to have a director or VP title if you are making $80k, because it's almost guaranteed you won't have the resume/results to make a big jump elsewhere, and at that point you are pidgeon holed with a low ball salary.
I don't take any promotion or title change without increased comp, and don't ever put my employees in a position to have to do that.
