Why would a drillship still be there? DP vessels should have evaded.

They were attempting to pull the remaining ~1000’ of riser but ran out of time so were stuck. They should’ve made the decision to evacuate earlier, no excuse. Sounds like they’re going to make it though.

Okay. I’m telling you. I know the tug company that was called out to retrieve it when seas calm down.

BS, as soon as you unlatch and clear the WH by a safe distance you can get underway. They sail while pulling and running riser all the time.

Your tug buddies lied to you.

It's 100% false.

Civil will perform a fly over after storm passes. No engineering data thus far indicated any break.

You think "Mississippi Weather Network" has folks out in the Gulf right now to confirm that?

They already recanted in the comments but have left the story up.

Y'all gotta stop trusting any rando Facebook account bruh. They're trying to get sensationalist clicks.

Holy shite that has to be a rough ride. They should have been able to start moving as soon as they disconnected at a few KPH but it probably got too rough to pull the BOP through the splash zone.

I guess they have automatic oilers and automatic fuel level switches to? Look, I worked out there for over 25 yrs no one leaves anything running when abandoning platforms or rigs. Way too much shite can go wrong. That's why they have battery back up.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that all Shell platforms leave the E-gen running when they evacuate and some even leave a Turbine gen running if it’s dual fuel. Everything is automated and all safeties are in place to shut it off if need be. The batteries on the platform are there to keep life saving equipment in service when all else fails or to survive the loss of normal power before the E-gen kicks on with 45s.

Do you know who you’re talking to? He knows
More about the oilfield and everything related to it then anyone else in the world. He does this shite for a living bro.

Don’t believe me? Ask him.

Thanks bro. I appreciate the compliment but I don’t know shite about the oilfield. I’m in the marine business. Oilfield biz is not in my wheelhouse.

interesting thread
so what have we learned?

the Mars platform definitely broke free unless it didn’t.
the Mars platform definitely was left manned unless it wasn’t
the Mars platform definitely was left with systems running unless it wasn’t
The drillship definitely got caught with production pipe down unless it didn’t

Anything else of note?

I think the only thing we really know for sure is the drillship got stuck out there. That’s confirmed by AIS.

Can’t imagine thats a fun place to be with the winds/seas this storm is pumping out.

we're right at the point to where if a thread makes it this long it turns into a pissing contest and personal sniping between 2-3 posters who know more than the other guy, can we skip that today?

I believe there was confusion between the Noble Globetrotter II being able to leave and "a platform breaking free".

We’ll just have to wait and see. I hope the rumors are false.

guys...I'm aboard Globetrotter 2...all life boats have broken free..the 100' crane is swinging freely as well. Thrusters not working. The MARS platform has broken free and is free floating in the Gulf.
