God I miss the V10s.

The cars sound like garbage now.

My favorite year for engine sounds live was 1989. They had just banned turbos and went to the 3.5L formula but then you could have as many or as few cylinders and the V angle could vary so just about every car on the grid had a VERY distinct sound. I could still differentiate most of them in the V10 era but it was much harder.

1989 saw a huge variety of engines

Honda had a 72 degree V10 in the McLarens

Williams had a 67 degree Renault V10

Ferrari had the glorious (soundwise) 65 degree V12

There were Ford Cosworth DFR V8s, Judd V8s, a Lamborghini 80 degree V12, a Yamaha 75 degree V8 and the Ford Cosworth HBA1 V8.

The sounds were incredible, I went to the Mexican GP and the US GP (on that horrible Phoenix street course) that year. Got to see Senna and Prost win that year.

Everything is fast in F1. like the 4 second tire change pit stop.

If a team has a 4 second pit stop in F1, somebody's losing their job. Even 3 seconds is not that good.

Anything over 3 seconds now is considered slow. I think the record is still 1.92 seconds which both Williams and Red Bull share.

We used to go to the grand prix in downtown Longbeach each year. It is absolutely insane to be standing near the track in a straight away.

I'm guessing that record will never be beaten. After so many unsafe releases last year, everybody has implemented more checks to make sure a car doesn't leave without all 4 wheel nuts.

The main reason there is no more refueling (which makes me sad) is pit fires. One of the worst was Jos Verstappen with Benneton in 1994.

Jos

One other that comes to mind was Schumacher in Austria in 2003, I "love" the in-car video where he just sits there waiting for them to put out the fire then heads on out to win the race.

Yeah, that's the reason given but almost every other form of motorsport has refueling. With the right equipment it can't be that dangerous. Although that Verstappen fire was pretty crazy.

There were two pit fires on the same car last week in IndyCar. In both cases they told the driver to just drive on and let the wind blow the fire out. Obviously, we can't be killing off 2 or 3 drivers a year like in the 60's but they might have taken safety too far. Some element of risk makes it more exciting.

Still not a fan of the open cockpit on them and drivers are still being killed on the race track because of it.

Since Senna in '94 the only F1 driver killed was Bianchi and I highly doubt a canopy would have saved him the way it hit the back of that crane. IRL/CART/IndyCar had 7 or 8 deaths in the same time frame, NASCAR a similar number and WRC 2 or 3.

As top-level motorsports go F1 is pretty safe.

Does the term "queer baits" even show up in Talladega Nights?
