The media and “Boy who cried wolf”

Is this situation somewhat of a case of “boy who cried wolf” concerning the media? I will be the first to admit I thought this virus thing was an overblown reaction by the media at first. But how much am I to blame? The national media has “breaking news and alerts” every 5 minutes everyday of the year and everything is blown out of proportion and over sensationalized to the absolute extreme. Combine that with “Facebook news” and ridiculous click bait articles dominating the internet and it leaves any thinking person in a place of skepticism regarding a reported potential threat or catastrophic event.

How anyone can look at the world, and our country in particular, and think this is overblown, is beyond me.

That wasn’t at all the point of the post. Do you know the story of boy who cried wolf? The point is the wolf eventually really is there but no one believes him because he has lied so many times before.

I still thinks it's overblown. A big spotlight has been put on something very small. If they shifted the spotlight to the flu, and beat it like a dead horse everyday, people would be afraid of that too, and people would be reporting deaths of relatives who died due to the flu, but many many more deaths.

Agreed that the media’s role in this wasn’t that THIS was overhyped, it was all the other shiite that’s been overhyped through the years causing a substantial amount of justified distrust in this case.
Now because no one trusts the media, everyone goes to their own slanted sources and instead of coming together, the divide grows on what to do in this situation.

The media probably wouldn't sensationalize if people watched un-sensationalized news.
I'm not defending news media, but they do what they do because the public wants it. It's chicken-egg.
We all claim we want real news, but if the nightly news was basically a little CSPAN mixed in with 15 minutes about a Ukranian financial scandal or a village slaughter in Africa instead of talking heads defending/shitting on Trump - how many people are really going to watch?
I'm not defending news media, but they do what they do because the public wants it. It's chicken-egg.

Are you slow in the head son? Do you live on a farm? The biggest cities in America are completely shut down for the first time in history. There's over 10,000 dead in Italy. The virus is just beginning to hit poorer countries. What does any of this have to do with the American media?

The "Breaking News" alerts are stupid. When you put the tag on everything, then it makes it pretty meaningless. I also do hate the news from either side has to have a political tilt to it. How the hell did we get to this point? I just take everything with a grain of salt and if I'm concerned with any particular issue, do my own research.
Bigger problem as I see it is the fact that so many now take anyone with a podcast, youtube channel or other social media account as trusted "news". This country is fricked until we learn how to put such people in the place they belong, meaning they can have a role but understand what that role is.
I first noticed this with the Ferguson riots and you have all these kids running around with a smart film, claiming they were the media because they were filming it. No. You're not the media. You're a shite disturber with a phone. I don't know the answer to it is but I'm not part of the media just because I have a smart phone.

If I am interested in anything political, I do turn to CSPAN. frick CNN. frick Fox. Both will tell you the rain outside isn't rain but the other side pissing on ya.
