I didn't know that. I knew of the movie theater that was across the street.. And I remember it closing.. Maybe late 90s, but I didn't know the Varsity was once a movie theater.

Ha! I do seem to remember that. I also remember the little burger joint around the corner called "Ollie's Trolley" that was built like....a trolley car.
Cool memories.

I worked at Tigertown Pharmacy in 1975. The Varsity Theater showed porn, but not explicit. It was soft porn. There was Round the Corner, and the Little Italian Restaurant where Cane’s is. Had really good food.

I finished around the world around 2000. damn I spent some money there
I would go to class, donate plasma and then go to the chimes with the plasma money.
I worked full time as well, but plasma money was chimes money

Does anyone remember when it was built? What was there before?
Long before most of us were born.

Yep. After that it showed second run films then foreign and artsy types of movies.

"Round The Corner"?
Yes. No. 5 - burger no cheese with fries. No 13 1/2--grilled cheese add tomato with fries.
When it closed, there was an on-site auction of all the stuff inside. I went, but (of course) could not buy anything because I had no money when I was in school.
RIP RTC.

Anyone remember the restaurant that was near the Varsity called "Round The Corner"?
Yep. I grew up going to one in Houston (it was a chain) so was happy to find one in BR. Sit down and order from a phone at your table.
In the 1980-81 timeframe, a bunch of us from Lafayette who were freshmen at LSU would go there frequently for nachos. The had these individual jukeboxes, may have actually been added while we were in school that year (honestly can’t recall. What o do recall is they had a live version of the Steely Dan song Bodhisattva. I always love that version of that song and it now always brings me back to that time. Good memories.

Props to you.
I was never a huge beer drinker, but when I was out I would drink.. One night while we were at The chimes I told the people I was with "I could do the drinking around the world challenge. It might take me awhile, but at least once a week I can knock out at least two".
That night, I had two of the drinks on the list, no problem. The next time the first beer I got.. I forgot the type, but it was dark, thick.. And had a really strong taste. I took two sips.. I just couldn't drink anymore. So I didn't even get started good before throwing in the towel.

In the very early 1980’s, there was a video game arcade next to the bicycle shop. It had a row of machines on either side with an aisle down the middle.
I was a big fan of Dragon Hall - few things were better for a Sunday hangover lunch.

Also for anyone interested, the 2015 horror comedy "The Final Girls" has a scene right outside The Varsity, which had its exterior altered to make it look like it was still a functioning movie theater. In fact, the characters go inside after that scene to watch a movie. The inside, of course, is not the real interior of The Varsity.

If I wasn't looking for it, I would have probably not even noticed it was The Varsity..

Retro night at the varsity circa 2004 was the GOAT. The line to get in was all the way to Cane’s. What happened to those days? Did City Bar downtown steal their crowd?
Posted on 3/10/20 at 1:59 pm to Paul Allen
Do they still get a pretty good crowd at The Varsity.. Well I would imagine they do otherwise they would be out of business. And it might be because I don't pass that way as often, but it seems like they don't bring in the type of entertainment they once did.
