How do you feel when your co-workers come by your office and ask for money? You don't want to be a smooch, but $10-20 a pop for their kids, spouse, baby shower and death (which I donate to), out for the flu/broken leg, etc. Seems like being a single male is the worst thing to be in these situations because you never have a cause!

How do you respond if your answer is no? I try to avoid them, but they shun you. Really?!?!

ETA: I added death. Death in the family and baby shower I will donate to. The rest bother me. Last year, we had some faculty start a donation because a teacher was saving for vacation.

Only thing I've been asked to do is buy raffle tickets. Never heard of that.

Except for when someone dies. They pass a card to sign and you can give money if you want to.

Where the hell do you work? I don't know if that's ever happened to me at work. I don't work with many women, so maybe that's the difference.

I feel your pain but my company does it via email and doesn't put people on the spot. Since we have over 250 employees, it's easy to fly under the radar. It does seem like it's always something though. I bet I could easily shell out a few hundred per year for birthday collections, baby gifts, deaths, people going through a hard time, dirty santa, going away parties, etc. I do give to the ones who need it though.

I like playing Secret Santa and will participate in it but know I am breaking even anyway. I will do the ones highlighted.

I work for a small company so it doesn't happen often but I did just pay 51.00 for take & bake cookie dough.
Giving because someone is out sick seems excessive.

Just straight up asking for cash? Or asking you to buy something to support a fundraiser?

I'd have a problem with co-workers just coming up to me asking for cash or donations for all kinds of random shite. Deaths would be one thing, but the rest they need to go ask their family and friends, not co-workers....or start a GoFundMe.

But if they're actually selling something (chocolates, Girl Scout cookies, candy, etc) for school, club, or sports team fundraiser then I always try to buy at least one box to help out....helping a good cause and gives me something to snack on at my desk.

I'd flat out refuse...who goes around asking for donations to fund a vacation? Only exception is if the teacher/spouse/child was diagnosed with a terminal illness and only had a short time to live, then I'd donate.

Wait wait wait....you're co-workers come to you and ask for money when they have a baby shower and when they are saving for vacation? You need to just come on out and tell those SOBs to move right on along past your office on that crap.

I've never had that happen to me at any job I've had. Now for deaths yea...we'd give donations to help get the kids and spouse by for the next few weeks/months...but a baby shower...come on.

I do baby shower and deaths but only for my department. And thats because when we had a kid they surprised me with donations.

No one ask to buy candy, etc because I will just hit them with "You want to purchase my kids stuff as well?" And I never ask when my kids have fundraisers for school- i just pay out my pocket.

I've never heard of such a thing. Mainly it's the company taking part in some kind of charity that they ask us to donate to.

Apparently a vacation would be an acceptable cause to that group.

Personally, this is bullshite! Taking up money for someone with a serious need, like maybe unexpected medical expenses or maybe to help someone who has experienced any kind of unexpected crisis and is trying to make it on a limited budget, but just for fun stuff?

A new one!

Just a reminder that we are taking up a donation for Ms. ****. If you would like to give, come to my office anytime. We will be taking up donations through Monday, Dec. 12th. This money will go to assist her as she recovers from her sprained ankle.

Thank you,

I'll sign a card, and I'll toss in some money for flowers when there's a death.

Nobody collects for anything else where I work. I sure as frick would not contribute to someone's vacation.

That is ridiculous. Expecting someone to donate for that. If someone in my office pulled something like that I would kindly tell them to frick off

We typically do it if there is a death or for baby showers. We recently had an employee whose house burned down because of an electrical fire and the company was soliciting donations of money or clothes and toys for the children. The company CEO was matching any dollar for dollar donations to send to the family.
