People bail all the time now. I have no idea how it used to be, but it's worse now than it was ~8 years ago or so.
it has gotten so much worse in the last 20 years, especially in the last 5 years.
We have friends that we just won't make plans with just them anymore due to frequency of bailing. We have flat out told them this too, yet they continue to bail on stuff.
I find that I bail on a few certain friends, much more than I used to. But still that is relatively rare occurrence.

That's the thing. Only one of my friends drinks. The rest just sit at home and play with their peckers. They're just lazy.
Yeah, that's a different thing. I wouldn't call them either.
If you're trying to make group dinner plans for 7:30 on Saturday evening for a bunch of 20-somethings, you have to expect some attrition.

I just put a text in the group me. Whoever shows, is whoever gets to have fun. It usually ends up being me, my girlfriend, my best friend and whatever chick he's smashing that week.

Seinfeld is a good reminder of how things used to be without cell phones and people were forced to be more reliable about meeting up.

I don't know what kind of people he's talking about, but by Thursday everybody I know is ready to knock back a few as soon as work is done.

I hate flaky people.
I ended a 10-year friendship a couple years ago because the bailing got increasingly worse over the years. She bailed three nights in a row in the same week, so that was it.
Respecting people's time is very important to me.
I have one friend who will ask to do dinner on a weeknight but not want to go until 7PM or later. Then at 7PM, I can't get in touch with them. Then they call back at 7:30 saying they accidentally fell asleep and can meet for 8-8:30. It happens every time.

I actually get less annoyed by people bailing than I do by people who show up way late to everything and don't tell anyone. If someone bails, they're at least up front about it, and I can make other plans.
I understand if someone bails on some event that the other person has been really looking forward to or something important to someone, but if it's a group of people and someone (or a few) bail, then it is probably for the best. If they bail they obviously didn't want to go, where as, in the past, they might have gone, but not really want to be there so they are just kind of hanging around not really having fun, etc.. No one wants to be around that person who isn't having fun and doesn't want to be there.
But a lot of things change during the week so what might seem like a good idea on Monday, might end up not being the best idea by Thursday.

He's right. But it's just the tip of the iceberg.
Smartphones allow us to check for severe weather, not get lost, and easier to get a ride when drunk. Other than that, they've been a huge negative for society.

At any kind of party, event, etc now, it's to the point where you just invite everyone you know. Most people will say they'll come then bail, and the numbers almost always work themselves out correctly for the given situation.

I know people that do this often. When you commit to something do it.
Could be just me.
