I think it went up rather dramatically. They also pay a shite load of other high taxes.
This is where progressivism ultimately ends. People rioting in the streets. They just have neutered weapons laws so they get to burn cars and throw rocks.

A tax on the lower classes all while a handful of corporations emit the vast majority of greenhouse gasses (if you're buying what they sold to begin with). This picture is a thing of beauty. It means there are still some that are awake.

The French have taxed their population to the breaking point. They need a good revolution. I'm just not sure which side surrenders first.

socialism and the inefficiencies that result cost a hell of a lot of cash to perpetuate.

I mean at some point, your budget can't take anymore. Artificially raising the price of a product everyone depends on 5% hits close to home to people that are already scraping by.

They pay a 20% VAT tax too which is essentially a national sales tax. Their overall tax rates are insane.

It is a combo of multiple things. That was just the straw that broke the camel’s back.
We think our taxes are bad, but theirs are horrendous.
On top of having to pay taxes, all of their utilities are extremely expensive because of strict taxation and regulation.
The politicians build their platforms based off of how to best serve the big cities, like Paris, while shitting on and flatout neglecting everyone else.
We see the same issues in the USA.
Take their gas taxation.
That minimally impacts those in Paris. They are able to walk everywhere. They have trams and trains and buses.
The suburbs and smaller towns don’t.
But why should anyone care about those yokels, right?

I guess, except that they're angry about things like rolling back inheritance tax and halting minimum wage increases, and they're busting out shop windows and burning cars as a result.
They're right they're getting screwed, but there is very likely a high percentage of the protestors whose desired solutions are pretty horrifying.

They already pay a 45% personal income tax and now the government wants more for climate change. Can you imagine giving up half your pay check every week for taxes?

We don’t have a significant alternative to gasoline yet, but that seems irrelevant to them.
Rather than trying to tax something away, they should focus on developing an alternative to replace it.
We aren’t to the point where an alternative exists and taxing something away works.

Here is a good write up on the situation:

quote:
The “Yellow Vest” protests he is a part of present an extraordinary venting of rage and resentment by ordinary working people, aimed at the mounting inequalities that have eroded their lives. The unrest began in response to rising gas taxes and has been building in intensity over the past three weeks, peaking on Saturday.
With little organization and relying mostly on social media, they have moved spontaneously from France’s poor rural regions over the last month to the banks of the Seine, where they have now become impossible to ignore.

Not to mention that much of the pollution in the world comes from developing countries. We would essentially have to pay for them to use cleaner technology.
And ultimately, most power sources like electricity still come from fossil fuels.

let's not forget that the "clean" alternative technologies have their own negative environmental impacts.

People want to manage climate change? Find a viable alternative to fossil fuels.
If they can pull that off, they can tax the shite out of gasoline to their little hearts’ delight.
Scruffy holds the same general mindset about certain research and technology, like space travel.
The research itself is integral to our survival and should be one of the most heavily federally funded projects.
Same for a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

Yep. Lithium mines for sure.

That’s a great article. It’s unsually sympathetic.
This is the real France.
quote:
Mr. Dou — who says his 9-year-old son has never been on vacation and his gross salary of 1,300 euros a month, about $1,475, “disappears immediately in the bills” — was among them. There is little left after high taxes and costly utilities such as electricity.
This is the real France.

Why are they rioting?
First I'm hearing about this.
Not surprised you’ve not heard about it. They’re rioting to protest the absurdly high fuel prices that have resulted from the Socialsit president of France raising taxes to comply with the Paris Climate Accords (the same ones Trump pulled us out of).
Since theses riots run counter to the globalist progressive agenda, like the good propaganda agencies they are, the US mainstream media is ignoring them.

Lefties in the US. "OMG - I can't believe Trump removed us from the Paris Climate Accord. We are all going to die!"
Same lefties "I filled up my Prius today and gas was only $1.90!"

Guess there's not many folks spending money lobbying for that.
