The French may be on to something

French students will not be able to bring their mobile devices to school come September, after the French parliament passed a ban last month. The Wall Street Journal calls the law one of the most "sweeping attempts yet to address growing concerns among parents and educators that a generation of children is growing up addicted to the mobile devices in their pockets." The ban applies to students under the age of 15, requiring all devices to be left at home or switched off until the end of the day.

So, basically the same policy almost every school in the country has. The devil is in enforcing it.

So what about extracurricular activities? Or in the event of a school shooting?
frick that. They are better off coming up with something that disables most of the phone's functionality unless an emergency is happening. To completely cut a lifeline for teenagers has several dangers around it.

My kids' schools all have this same policy--no cell phones allowed or at least they must be turned off and put away in either backpack or lockers during school hours.
If teachers or administrators see them or hear them ring, they take them away and the parent has to come to the school to get it back after a certain amount of days. Third time, they can't get it back until the end of the year.

We have a guy working for us part time who's a HS math teacher. Some of these kids mothers will text them in class then bitch at him for confiscating the phones.

I can remember people who had their phone out texting in class getting their phone taken up by the teacher and they had to go to the principal’s office after school to get it back.

Yeah. I’m sure the school would never allow a landline phone to be used or notify parents in the event of an emergency. It’s unprecedented to be apart of extra curricular activities and not have a cell phone. I mean, Zach Morris has a cell phone.

The few school districts I went through had the teachers take them if seen and we would have to pay $15 after school

So by this logic, we are going to wait until they've already had 5+ years of parents letting them play or learn on iPads & phones? 8 hours a day for 12 years isn't going to fix that. Parents need to be a better job or providing more organic learning instead of taking the lazy way out.

What emergency, dooms day scenario do you have concocted in your head where landlines won’t be accessible by anyone in the school?
And yeah landlines at residences are phasing out, not at businesses/govt entities that would make no sense.

Is this not currently standard practice? When I was in school, we couldn’t have phones at all. If you got caught with one, you were boned.

They are French, so they will technically be surrendering their phones.

I was waiting for some millineal to come back with this shite. News flash: you dont need cell phones for after school activities. Many generations got by just fine without them and we all played football, baseball, etc.

Every teacher and school employee has a phone. It only takes one person to call the cops.

I agree with not having them out during school, but would laugh in some dumbfrick teacher's face if they tried to hold a cellphone I'm paying for for months or more. Just give it back to me and I'll make sure Junior doesn't bring it back to school.
