Spaceman Spiff,

We need to set aside time to write. You want to do that sometime?

d it really is just an energy question - all of it boils down to energy - energy is a proxy for everything and everything is a proxy for energy. Find a free/nearly free way to produce infinite/nearly infinite energy - and the universe changes, not just this planet and our species.

Bingo! One experiment being done by the Japs is pretty intriguing. They are trying to harness electrons in the solar winds around earth and beam them via an electron particle beam back to earths surface in an attempt to create convertible usable energy.

In a way, yes. But wait until the discovery of the buckle drive...

I'm not gonna lie, at first I was like what the hell does that stupid vacuum have to do with it.

Anthropocentrism is a rather strong bias at play here. From the house arrest of Galileo to the burning of Giordano Bruno at the stake, humanity has had a tough time accepting our relative insignificance. It is best to withhold judgement until we get a better idea of our place in the vast universe.

Cosmic background radiation exploration and the increasing precision of cosmology is helping us to make discoveries that were unimaginable even a few decades ago. Particle physics is making similar strides in our understanding of the microscopic world. Should be an interesting few decades coming up.

It will be even more interesting once that colony is found living on the island in the middle of a river in Florida...

If successful, that would make us a Type I civilization that is in the very early stages of attempting to become a Type II civilization (which would be hundreds of thousand to millions of years off)...

Yep, it's really cool to think we are in the neighborhood. The next idea behind the electron particle beam is beaming matter. Very Trekkie

I find your insightful theories fascinating. Is there a place I can learn more about this new era we will soon be entering?

What would even be the motivation to become Type II? The more civilized you get the lower the birth rates are. Even accounting for life extending technologies, terraforming and asteroid mining the solar system should be much more achievable than Type II and keep you close to home. Also, I seriously doubt advanced civiliztions are using radio waves for long range communications. With what little we know about Quantum Computing and Quantum Entanglement, it'd probably be better to communicate through "entangled" computers than radio wave transmissions. Thanks for the link

Another intriguing hypothesis. What happens when a civilization reaches a point in technological progression that they can simulate reality?

Why would the limitations of our physical reality matter anymore at that point. Plug in and become God in a sense.

This was mentioned as a possibility in the article. A civilization having no need to contact anyone outside their bubble, since they are all plugged in to their own nirvana.
