Everyone (well the ones that matter I suppose) feels better, but at what point does not wanting to hurt anybody’s feelings morph into being a danger to themselves, the truth, or society as a whole?

IOW, what do we sacrifice by not being honest, or speaking our minds?

There’s literally no upside to political correctness.

This isn't true. Political correctness fosters permanent resentment that cannot be cured. It is a cancer on the human spirit. There's a reason leftists are generally miserable human beings who look for things to be offended over.

It’s just another iteration of the same authoritarian censorship that’s been going on in different forms for hundreds of years in dozens of different societies that ultimately end up being shitty to live in. Anyone who thinks the government or big corporations actually care about minorities, women, etc. has brain damage

They're not doing those things out of actual concern. It's all about online brownie points.

So, under the guise of righting the wrongs of history’s racial sins for instance, could it be said that it does nothing but maintain and grow resentment and division?

Ive always fashioned this stuff today as more of a get even spirit than a spirit of healing and forgiveness, and as such, keeps the resentment coming, because if you can’t forgive and move on, it becomes a cancer eating you up from within.

The goal of PC is to silence and/or deplatform most the population.

You are now seeing it in action.

We are raising a generation of young people who think they have a right to not be offended.

I was raised in the time of multi-cultrualism. We were taught to learn about other cultures, try their foods, clothes, music, etc. The thought being that, if we could learn about other people we would learn that while we all have different customs, we would learn that we all basically want the same thing and have the same problems. The problem is we don’t all want the same thing - yes we generally want our kids to grow up in a safe environment, have enough money to have food and shelter, etc. However, multiculturalism was an American thing. I don’t think other countries gave a damn and then the “marginalized minority” didn’t give a damn and said whites are the problem not them.

So all of that changed. Millions of kids raised to try and embrace other cultures are now told we are racist because we try to embrace other cultures. frick the elitist academia who think they know what is best, push their bulls hit agendas, and treat the population like ill conceived science experiments.

I tell our 14 yr old fairly often that she has no right to not be offended and to suck it up buttercup. Hopefully she won't join Antifa in a few years to get back at dad

hurt feelings

This is what really aggravates me. It's ok to have hurt feelings or to be offended. You won't die. Everyone will get over their hurt feelings. It's not a big deal.

Downside: PC is often taken to the extreme. Those of us who violate the newest PC protocol with no ill intent are then judged or labeled.

Upside: understanding why a person of a different race, gender, sexuality, culture, or ideology believes what they believe or gets offended by what I say is pretty powerful. If I am a politician aiming to get just 51% of the votes in an election, I can use that to my advantage to energize my base. If I am in any other business that seeks to serve a more diverse market, I better gain that understanding.
