Most companies don’t drug test. Of the ones that do, hardly any perform hair tests. It depends on the field, but for most fields all it does is add unnecessary expenses on the company.

I don't know about hair testing but our company drug tests 25% of the employees each quarter. Statistically speaking that should cover each employee once a year but some poor saps get caught 2-3 times in the same year.

I guess it depends on the kind of work and the potential risk involved. Bob the pencil pusher who works at a desk probably won’t be any liability to the company if he tokes up every day. Whereas some baw who works around heavy machinery that could crush him like an insect could be a potential lawsuit if he was high and something happened.

Along those lines...why does my company (who is 90% "pencil pushers") test so much? Very few non engineers working in my area and no heavy equipment operators here on this jobsite.

Absolutely wrong but it does depend on the industry and which sectors you serve. If you are doing DOT work, you may have drug testing. If you work in the oil industry, for a major in particular, you'll likely do drug testing. Most of the engineering firms I have worked for do drug and alcohol testing relative to the requirements that the companies they provide service for require.
If you're in law, finance, banking, or accounting you may get a pass. Not that familiar with those.

Your company isn't the exception. Mine drug tests 25% of all employees once a quarter. Just hope you're not the poor sucker getting caught 2-3 times a year....going to that place to give a sample SUCKS!

I've worked as a pipefitter and an instrument fitter before I got my engineering degree...I've been drug tested MORE as an engineer than the times I was working in PetroChem.
