lol that colleges are such dinosaurs of liberalism they suck the quasi-government/capitalist teat to the point they make students buy $300 textbooks in 2016

just funny

i havent bought a textbook since i graduated college in 1990 and yet somehow whenever i need an answer to an electrical, mechanical or .NET related question, the GOOGLE takes care of me.

Do professors get kickbacks from the publishers? Why the hell are these books so expensive??

When I was in college, a lot of my professors hated new editions of books if only because they had to check and make sure the syllabus was still correct.

They don't like the constant changes anymore than the students but the publishers make money off new book sales so things get added or removed or re-numbered/re-organized.

I remember one professor kept the syllabus for an old edition and advised us to get that edition or to pay attention and make sure we read the correct info according to the subject (i.e. they didn't even bother to change the page/chapter numbers on the syllabus).

I rent mine from Amazon, $20 - $50 a semester. With the VA book allowance, I end making money with this method.

But that's illegal! Haha.

I try to torrent or find a .pdf if possible first. Though it can gets difficult sifting through all of those sketchy arse sites. Next ask the teacher directly how much the book will be used and if an old edition will work. Most say an old edition is fine though you still need to buy an access code which typically comes with an online copy. If you can't get an old edition then International Editions are the way to go. EBay is a good spot to start.

Having an engineering degree does not make you an engineer.

student loans at ridiculous interest rates that you can't default on. that most kids parents/society basically force them to take out because of government brain washing.

It's not a scam. Most academic publishers barely break even.

i think you've got your answer there. the publishing house that published your book on pallium fashions in the eleventh-century orthodox church is probably not rolling in the dough.

mcgraw hill, which does several billion dollars worth of business every year, is doing fine.

and @OP, profs don't get kickbacks, though i would gladly accept them if we did! it's the publishing industry, not colleges or individual profs. i advise students to buy earlier editions of textbooks to save money.

The $1,000 is better than nothing but you just burned through half your stipend on one course.
