The Chinese want to use Facial Recognition of dogs to fine owners that don't pick up poop

Buried in a feel good story about a Chinese AI company that supplies facial recognition software to reunite owners with lost pets is this little nugget:

China is leaning hard into Big Brother to manage the population, it will be interesting to see some of the social impacts of all of this.

But in China, Megvii says its app will be used for more than just reuniting owners with their lost pets. With its existing relationship with the government, it says its app can also be used to monitor “uncivilized dog keeping” to fine civilians who don’t pick up after their dogs or allow them to walk without leases in public spaces.

They’re well past “leaning hard”

Wish all the apartment complexes at LSU did this....

I lived in an apartment that required you to give a sample at move in so they could fine rule breakers at the park.
ETA: The problem though, was that the owners that didn't clean up after their dogs were also the owners that weren't paying the pet deposit/fee and had never been tested.

Sounds like an excuse for the Chinese government to log their citizens into a facial recognition database.

That technology will come in handy when they decide to cull the population for downsizing number of people.

They don't need an excuse, they're already doing it. The company behind this already sells facial recognition software to the Chinese government and by training their software to recognize dogs it's an expansion of the services they can offer the government.

San Francisco could use this

Apartment complex where I lived in Asheville required DNA samples from all dogs living with owners in the apartments. Two hundred fifty dollar fine for first offense then eviction for the second.

I won't be long when our gov't knows actually where you are and what you are doing at any second of the day.

How much did it cost for them to run DNA samples of dog shite?

They would have gotten a random sample from some dog park from me.

The apartment management required the tenants owning dogs to pay for the initial test for the data base, and then part of fine covered the costs of the dna test on the poop.

I do find all of this fascinating. I also have no desire to live in a system like that.
I hope we can prevent the use of these technologies here.

It didn't work that way. Saliva samples were taken from each dog in the complex and dna run for the data base.
