If I could go back and personally witness one battle in the Revolution, it would be this one. The descriptions of it are crazy. The intensity. Charlestown burning. Face to face combat. Incredibly high casualties. Chaos.

1,500 combined casualties.
40% casualty rate on the British side.
~1 out of every 8 British officers who would die in the war died in this battle.

The day the British started taking the Americans seriously.

When I visited what's left of the battlefield I was surprised at how gentle the slope of the hill is. From reading the history of it, you would assume that it was a steep incline, but it isn't. The obelisk monument is a bitch to climb all the way to the top of, but the view is pretty awesome and worth the effort.

I went there on a trip, it was 86 degrees, so they closed the tower due to extreme heat.

With how much Boston has been altered since 1775, I figured it looked more dramatic and daunting back then.

Shame the battlefield itself has been overcome by urban sprawl but that's what happens when you fight a land battle so close to a major city.

Yeah, it was definitely narrower.

The alterations are fascinating too. Imagine doing all of that work without engine powered machines. Shovels, wagons, horse pulled slip scoops, and a shite-ton of Irishmen.

There are few things in life that sound worse than a Boston accent out of a woman’s mouth
