I'm glad they built it. There needs to be more bridges. No bridge from BR to Natchez is just dumb. It will serve a purpose someday. Mabye when they expand hwy10 into a viable alternative to I-10..
Another reason it was built is that they have a nuke power plant with in two miles. If for some reason something happens there, that bridge will be used to get people out the area fast. People in this area suppose to get to BR if shite hits the fan. I am talking about 40K in people. How would the bridges in BR could handle that much more people on their bridges?

Audubon built in Baton Rouge

So much nicer and more appreciated.
Good news is, they have to be saving a shite ton of money on maintenance since 10 cars a day use it.

Refusing to change obsolete plans and forging ahead anyway to the tune of $800m is also a distinctly Louisiana thing

The same exact way they handle every other large event like hurricane evacuations or football games.

DOTD should be ashamed of themselves letting the bridge sides turn black.
You would think somewhere in their billion dollar budget they could buy a pressure washer or 2 to clean the bridge.
It is not just this one. A few others could use a wash or 2 per year.
The 310 bridge in Luling’s center could use a coat of paint. I thought they would have done that when they repaved it a few years ago. Nope. Still rusty.

This is Louisiana after all...Why would you maintain anything?

I remember driving upon this bridge on my way to hunting camp two years ago. I was so confused. I thought I’d deviated way off course, because surely something like this would not exist here.

DOTD doesn’t gaf. They’re waiting on one of them to collapse so the federal government will step in and pay for new bridges.

the first time one of my (Delivery) drivers saw it he slowed down and was like woah woah woah....
it was hilarious because it was kind of overcast and suddenly the clouds parted and lit up the bridge like it was going into heaven or something as if those spans were illuminated.....

That's weathering steel.

Well
It wasn’t needed 60 years ago and it isn’t needed now

Some politician probably lives in New Roads and travels frequently to St Francisville.

Nice pic. Must have been taken during rush hour.

It was built as part of the Zachary Taylor parkway project. An attempt at a bypass from 1-49 to I-55 to alleviate the need to go through BR. Part of the project was expanding La1, La 966, and 965 to create a route to La10 across to I-55.
As I understand it, after the bridge was opened it didn’t see the increase in usage so plans to widen these roads were scrapped and money was sent somewhere else. It’s still a usable route, just not appealing to the 18 wheelers as they were hoping for

The Audubon bridge is an example of how to get things done in a state that isn't accustomed to delivering anything of substance to taxpayers. New Roads and St. Francisville wanted a bridge. They had a general idea of where the bridge should be placed. They pushed for it. 30 years later, they finally got it.
It looks like there's consensus that a new bridge should be built around Plaquemine Point, but the Ibberville Parish leaders will not support it unless it's built much farther south where it's just not needed. So the bridge will ultimately never get built until that a-hole is silenced.

Take a look at the map for south Louisiana - there are few continuous routes appropriate for freight that parallel I-10/I-12 - especially east of Baton Rouge.
I think Louisiana needs a tolled, limited access turnpike system following these approximate routes:
And they can probably get away with having a 4 lane cross section if they can keep exits at least 10-15 miles apart.
When I-10 and I-12 get clogged (and they will, because the surface road network in Louisiana is atrocious), this will still enable freight to move around.

I am not talking about the superstructure.
I am talking about the center median unless they used the same material and just painted it to make it more visible for drivers and over time the rust stains the paint.
It looks ugly. I remember that bridge was used for a national or regional car commercial. I could identify the bridge based on the rust spots.

One day I planning a road trip through Acadiana and wanted to use HWY 10 as a route.
Good thing, I used Google Street View and saw that section that was unpaved and the Ferry is now MIA to cross the Atchafalaya.

We need evacuation routes. Nuke plant, other plants, hurricanes, and- God Forbid- should something catastrophic happen involving the levee system up river. It's a good idea to have a bridge between BR & Natchez for those reasons alone.
