i used to be a total PB hater.... then my neighbors bought a pure bred. they were pure white trash, but that dog was the sweetest thing i've ever come across. when we were outside together, she'd sprint over to our house and for the first few weeks i'd think i was about to have to choke a dog... but it just came, to my feet rolled over and let me and the kids scratch it.
never once showed an ounce of aggression towards our family. since then i've met about 2 or 3 that were really great, and more that were not unfortunately, but it changed my outlook about the breed. we currently have a lab and a coonhound, and both are more aggressive than some pits i've met.
i would say it's all about the owner, but our neighbors treated that dog like trash and it still was always very beta and kind to our family.

The stand-up bass player in my name is from Vermont, and never came across pits. She was afraid as hell when she met her. Now, my dog cuddles at her get wine we're practicing.
Hopefully the dog stays kind and gentle. But these are the ones that are most likely to randomly snap. Good natured with no direction on how to properly behave. A majority of attacks are fear based aggression. Bringing mine everywhere allowed as a puppy helped eliminate any fear (and as a bonus, helped get me laid a few times).
When I walked into a shelter to adopt, I told the guy what type of dog i was interested in. He said "we have this one" and put her on the counter. She immediately ran up and started kissing me. I felt bad for the other dogs in the shelter, because they had no prayer after that. Dogs of the same breed have different personalities. I feel fortunate that mine was naturally affectionate and extroverted.
To this day, my only issue is she's an aggressive kisser and cuddler.

Because the very first dog recognized as an American Staffordshire Terrier was Petey, from the Little Rascals, in 1936 or so....Petey was an American Pitbull Terrier.

Pitts have been demonized. Therefore shelters are chok full of them. People fell bad and adopt them. There are a ton of Pitt mixes out there too. They look enough like Pitts to be tossed as well.
They are demonized for a reason. They kill people. If a Schauzer nips you it sucks but when a Pitt nips you you're fricked and when it nips a kid it may be fatal. Kind of like a shark.
I love Blue Pitts. It's a beautiful dog. I have a 6 year old so I would never own one. Also I have friends who I would like have visit without fear that their children are eaten.

Correct. The same people who say "we should allow anyone to come to America. We can fix this poor human who has been conditioned to chop off heads and rape women." Same people.

It was still considered a vicious killing machine at one point in American history. The biggest difference being a
German Shepard is easily identified, where as a pit is very hard to identify and is commonly lumped in with any random mutt with a block head or big chest.

You are right in saying the breed has been demonized. The media has been over the top in dog attacks over the past 10-15 years. Every dog attack is assumed by them to be pits. I have seen reports referencing pit bull attacks that show dogs that clearly are not pits. The issue isn't the breed. There is an enormous amount of incorrect identification of attacking dogs and there has been a lot of crossbreeding over the past 20 years or so by folks wanting bigger examples of pits.
I have owned and raised pits/Amstaffs for over 30 years now and I have only had one that I didn't trust 100%. He was a pit/American bulldog cross....weighed 110 lbs....truth is, he wasn't a true pit bull.
Yes, pits are naturally aggressive.....towards other dogs or animals in their turf, not people. They are, after all, terriers. The key to having a well balanced, trustworthy dog is on the other end of the leash, regardless of the dogs breed. One has to become their dogs' leader or the dog will try to lead. It's their nature as pack animals, no matter the breed.
