what trail runners are you using? I want to shuck boots but I’d rather have a little ankle support than none
I've been using Altra trail runners for the last few pair, but used Merrill as well. I started out with hiking boots, thinking I needed the ankle support, but learned better. I've backpacked thousands of miles with trail runners and never have ankle problems. Almost every hike (as recently as this past weekend) I roll my ankle completely to the side of my foot and never miss a step. Once the tendons (I guess) are stretched, the ankles are very robust joints.

That's impressive, but at that rate she didn't get to see much of it. Which is kind of the point of the trail.
she can enjoy it on the walk back

just wanna know what shoes/insoles she's using
She wears Altra Lone Peaks.
Probably rotates at few pairs throughout the day, they last an average of 300-400 miles these days, so 5-6 pairs over the 40 days.
Not sure about insoles.

All of the AT speed records are not supported. "Supported" is one category. Many people, usually after hiking the trail a couple times, go for a "record" un-supported speed.
Ackshually

There are 3 categories:
1. Supported, what most of these ultra runners do when going for FKTs on the long trails, they have a crew who meets them at roads with food, gear, beds, bjs, etc.
2. Unsupported, literally carrying all food, supplies, replacement shoes, etc on your back from day 1, no town stops, no pacers, no help or resupply. Longest I have heard of people setting unsupported FKTs on is Colorado Trail, ~490 miles. The only way to do the AT "unsupported" would be to forage, trap, hunt, fish along the way.
3. Self-supported, basically what thru hikers do, resupply in towns, no pacers, no hitch hiking, no planned trail magic but if some random offers you a beer or snack spontaneously you can accept it.
The FKT community can be a weird bunch with their rules. The website is a great resource though for gpx files if you are looking for a route to hike or backpack.

i'm having trouble breaking this mental barrier as well. When i'm backpacking i like to go deep into the backcountry, and i just feel better with boots on.

you probably hop in your car and drive around Cades Cove to take in the nature
Never met Cade or seen his cove. The only driving we do is between Dolly Wood and the many Ripley's attractions singing along to Ronnie Milsap songs.

I’m referring to the supported FKT which she just broke.

I've always heard this as well. I pulled world record for various distances and the times don't get closer. however they probably do when talk about rec level runners and not world record.

I have a friend who was on an amateur cycling team with me and he was not very good. The pack would drop him at the first jump in almost every race.
But he was an insane rock climber and a few years ago he hiked down the Grand canyon went across the river and up the other side then back down across the river again and back up the original side in one day.
Still an amazing feat to me as I believe it was over 50 miles but to do that every day for 20 days is ridiculous.

Rim to rim to rim in one day is bonkers.

"What a loser. That's not how to appreciate the Grand Canyon. I bet he didn't even check out the gift shop."

R2R2R in a day isn't bonkers. its 44 miles 10.5k gain. fastest known time UNSUPPORTED for men is 6:38 men and 8:06 women.
its on my list of adventures. my point of reference is I completed Hurl Elk Horn 50 miler with 11.6k gain in 12.5 hrs and i'm not that good.

I haven't hiked the GC so I am only speaking theoretically for myself i guess. Seems bonkers to me but I guess it's not that crazy when you break it down like that. Still a ton of miles though.
