Peter Frates, whose battle with ALS inspired the viral 'Ice Bucket Challenge,' has died at the age of 34, his family announced Monday in a statement through Boston College.
Frates, who was diagnosed with ALS at age 27, championed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and was nominated in 2014 to be Time Magazine's "Person of the Year," alongside fellow ALS warrior Pat Quinn.
"Remarkably, Pete never complained about his illness. Instead, he saw it as an opportunity to give hope to other patients and their families. In his lifetime, he was determined to change the trajectory of a disease that had no treatment or cure," his family said.
The ALS Association said that the Ice Bucket Challenge wound up increasing its cash flow by 187%, giving the associated the ability to put $90 million into new research from 2013-2018.
The ice bucket challenge has raised more than $200 million worldwide for research into ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Participants would challenge others to share videos of themselves dumping a bucket of icy water over their own heads to raise awareness. The fundraiser began in 2014 when pro golfer Chris Kennedy challenged his wife’s cousin Jeanette Senerchia, whose husband has ALS.

I had zero idea that the Ice Bucket Challenge had anything to do with ALS. And I know I'm not the only one.

not to rain on any parades, but I was never totally aware of how exactly pouring ice on people helped any one with ALS
like was there some random person donating money for every video that got made or what?

The person getting poured on donated also I think.
It raised over $200 million I believe.

oh I gotcha
well I definitely know at least one or two people that did it for the FB clout but never cut a check
I asked a girl who did one about it and you could tell it had sincerely never occurred to her to even consider it

Yeah it did, but who cares as long as people donated.
And a lot of people did. It raised hundreds of millions I believe.
ALS is a disease that I think I might take my own life before it ate me up too badly. The end of ALS is bad. Really bad.

I think you did the challenge after you donated to show you did. Most people just did the challenge tho for likes and upvotes on social media.

RIP. That's a shame. 34 years old.

I could be wrong, but I read that as one entity raised 90 million, but the ice bucket challenge raised over $200 million with all charities, etc combined.
