re: The Advocate finally asks the question: Too many universities in La?

Addendum:
I attended HS in LA, then JUCO in MS, then a directional LA 4-year, then moved to Texas and earned a Graduate Degree. I have seen first hand many different state models.
While the Advocate is correct, Florida may have 4 times the population of LA but less 4-year universities; Texas is very similar in the amount of of public universities. The difference in TX is that they have 2 flagship systems who have their own feeder programs (UT and the UT system, TAMU and the TAMU/Blinn programs). In addition, they have large public universities in all of their large cities, many of which have succesful private schools located within their domain.
MS has 3 strong public 4-years and an expansive JUCO system. Higher education wise, MS has a much healthier system than LA.

Follow the states which have a similar population makeup. Colorado or South Carolina. All have two major universities and everything else is private or 2 year

I know I'm way late to this but LOL at them not writing this article for the last 8 years.

Merging UNO with SUNO would kill UNO. No 18 yer old wants to be in a class with a bunch of 30 year old African Americans. UNO would eventually become a black school

Probably right.
On a brighter note, basketball would be competitive again.

And UNO is ranked higher in academics than ULL. Get rid of ULL and BRCC. All those dumbasses just go to these schools to party and can't get into LSU because they're lazy or just dumb

We need more BRCC's and less Nichols, ULL, McNeese, LSU-Alexandria, etc.

Cut:
SUNO, LSUS, LSUA, Nicholls, ULM.
Problem solved.

fricking LSU cut the landscaping crew so it could add administrators a while back

Posted on 1/24/16 at 9:33 pm to Slippy
They need to cut out a bunch of useless arse class at these schools too. For the last 20 years I've had at least 1 out of every 7 employees under my direction that held degrees for which there was no call or the field did not pay enough to keep them off of gov't assistance.

Look for the advocate to push this agenda because they don't want to lose any more subscribers in Baton Rouge and New Orleans regional areas due to state layoffs in those areas. Easier to push the Northeast v. northwest v. Southwest cuts than Baton Rouge and NOLA.

ULM should be cut. If you want to go to a university in the northern part of the state, go to LA Tech.

I wouldn't say excellent. I was accepted into it and declined and went to UAMS. Better school and cheaper tuition even for out of state.
The state needs 7 universities:
LSU
ULL
McNeese
SLU
UNO
Southern
Tech
ULM and tech should be combined into one. They could have a student body of about 20-25,000 and become the Auburn of Louisiana. Either move the pharmacy and nursing program to tech or give it to LSU health sciences since it's already in Shreveport. They would get better experience anyway getting to work on projects with other health professionals
Nicholls needs to become a culinary institute, Grambling is just an abomination, and NSU is useless. None of those sports programs make money so you can't use that as an excuse to keep them open. No reason for LSUS, LSUE, LSU alexandria to be open either.
But hey what do I care, I'll never live here again. Louisiana and Mississippi are probably the two worst states in America, they finish last in every category except obesity. It'll be fun to watch the corrupt state crash because they have more universities open than a state with 5 times as many people.

I haven't read through anything more than the first page and damn near ever response is:
Yeah, I agree, but we shouldn't close School X because they have a good Program Y.
Therein lies the problem in LA...

This isn't 1965. HBCUs aren't 100% black anymore.
Despite your own personal preference, sometimes HBCUs are the best option for kids who want a cheap and local education.

LSU BR graduates more African Americans than Southern, FYI.
Posted on 1/24/16 at 10:05 pm to Golfer
I know. It's still a cheaper option than LSU.

They're pretty close in price when you take room & board out of the picture. Like $1500 different.
And of course there's TOPS.
