Just got home from "Community Ball" practice, we are playing 10U and 3 new kids look like they've never thrown a ball. One was adopted out of a drug infestation. The excitement in their faces is tremendous.
This, I find it very rewarding

You got a love those World Series at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach marketed by the travel teams with " we will play a weeklong World Series in Orange Beach this year so you can also vacation with the family at the same time."
Have you ever gone to a USSSA World Series in Orange Beach?

I make sure to ask him if he still enjoys it.
i played a travel sport every year before i realized i hated it. my parents didn't pressure me to play whatsoever, but i guess i felt like i "had to" play for whatever reason. i broke my arm before the season in 7th grade, and going fishing and doing other stuff every weekend made me realize i didn't want to play.
school sports and camps in the summer were good enough for me.

but literally almost no practical skill comes from playing baseball other than how to play baseball
Being able to throw a baseball is a life skill. Don't let your kid be the one that becomes an adult and throws a baseball like a bitch

Yep. My kids and I went with my brother and his wife and their three kids. We made it to a couple of their games. He made it clear that he would rather me have fun than keep going back and forth to the park. He ended up hating it. His other two kids spent just about all of their time with us when their brother was playing ball. Those two would have been miserable if we weren't there. There were at least two nights where my brother and wife were pissed they could not stay up too late drinking because they had an eight or 9 o'clock game in the morning in 90 degree heat. He was excited when their team got knocked out with two or three more nights left of vacation . His son came back and said "we lost again in bracket play, but the good news is I get to spend the rest of my time on vacation". And my brother was finally ready to drink like an Irishman

My sons team is playing this weekend. My boy is out of his mind excited. If they play like they have been practicing, we will be home early!!

Yep.
Then you know no one is forced to stay a whole week. The WS games are Wednesday-Saturday and the most they would play is 2 games a day. There's plenty of free time for the kids and the adults.

Amen. Well said. If my only fault is my kids love playing sports, and I enjoy spending all the time I can with them before they grow up...then I'll take that fault anytime. Beats the hell out of ignoring them.

It is sometimes difficult to find condominiums for less than a week. Either way you're unlikely to be driving over there on a Wednesday and driving back on Saturday with game times and check in and check out times . And you also know that many, if not most, families try to make a weeklong vacation out of it anyway. I suppose for some kids, especially some of the older ones this is a dream.
My recommendation is for a parent to be sure his or her son is playing travel ball and practicing three or more nights a week because he wants to and not because you want him to or he think you want him to

Exactly, so what's wrong with that?

Why did you have kids? You had a choice.

I don't understand why you're dogging it

I'm not meaning to dog travel baseball as a whole. What I am meaning to dog are parents whose kids play because the kid Believes that his parent wants him to play travel ball and practice four times per week plus individual trips to the batting cages and batting coaches. The adults who are obsessed with it and have their kid play ball nine months out of the year. Sure, there are kids who genuinely enjoy that. And that is great. However there are probably just as many parents who actually think that their kids enjoy it, when their kids really do it because they might feel pressured either directly or indirectly by a parent. You've probably seen a few yourself. I once saw A parent refuse to let his child ride a skateboard because he was on a travel baseball team. I know that is just one instance and these parents are the minority in travel ball. But you also see more of these parents in travel ball. I am not saying you are one of those. You do not seem like it either. I am not saying your travel team is even one of those. There are many travel teams that practice only two times a week and do OK in tournaments. I hope your child has a blast if you are the one who said he is excited about the tournament this weekend . Good luck. Seriously . By the way, which tournament is it? I ask because my nephew is playing in a tournament in Gonzales this weekend. His team sucks.

So I know I'm real late to this thread but I'll say I played travel ball.from the time I was 9 years old up through high school where I played legion and summer ball so I still played on th weekends but didn't go all over the country just local. My little cousin is playing travel ball now. Most teams don't practice every day. Maybe once a week if at all the. They Just show up and play on the weekends. They practice with their league team and parents. I turned out great and loved it and so did most of the guys i played with and my little cousin seems to enjoy it as well. And to those who saying it doesn't make a difference, I'll say that I played on 4 different travel teams and usually played the same 10 to 15 teams most tournaments and knew some of the travel ball players younger and older than me and I can name at least 1 kid who had the oppurtunity to play college ball on every one those teams and over 95% of those kids all started on their high school teams.

This was you taking a jab. It's cool though.

This included kids all over South Arkansas from Texarkana to Monticello, North Louisiana from Shreveport to monroe. And all over east texas

Yeah it was taking a jab. LOL. I think first time travel ball parents don't know what they're getting into with that, at least some of them. My brother certainly did Not. Lol. Many and even most probably end up enjoying it and that's great . Again, my jab is just at a minority of parents .
