Stand on a sunny parade ground in a beret and you will understand why they try to shield and eye.
That said it shouldn't be in front of the eye. The bottom should be one inch above the brows and the "floppy" side should be centered on the right ear and the flash or rank should be centered on the left eye.

That was a 173rd and Fort Lewis (Stryker) thing as well. Get your beret as floppy and thin as can possibly be. Definitely copying the fashion of the SF teams on that one.

When the Army authorized black berets for all soldiers not wearing a beret in 2001, I got the honor of being assigned to one of the two leg units at Fort Bragg.
At least I didn't look like a pizza chef and had one SGT in the 82nd say I wore my beret better than some of his soldiers.

Haven't worn that shite since 2008.
Eta: let the special forces wear berets. The black berets were for recruiting purposes in mid 2000's.
