For sure, most dishes are pretty cheap. Doing all the cooking takes time and oven space.

$58 is laughable unless you just want a ghetto thanksgiving

The more you make from scratch without a bunch of preservatives, the less ghetto it gets such as avoiding dumping a can of cream of mushroom soup on some beans.

Yeah, you're not going to get Free Range Turkey and eggs, organic milk etc for $58. And, it's a definitely a lot easier to pop Sister Shubert's in the oven.

However, cooking a good meal would seem to be something that one may make a little time for on the holiday that's actually most identifiable with good food. Especially for Thanksgiving when most families have multiple people to share the cooking. Guess my family is in the extreme old fashioned minority there.

You never know with this board . One subject people go nuts about lazy, unhealthy people signalling the downfall of society and then get testy when you suggest home cooking for a special family holiday with natural ingredients is actually pretty cost effective.

I'm going to make dinner with my mother, who's 83.

She loves the traditional Thanksgiving dinners from when she was young and then me and my brother were kids with the real homemade cornbread dressing and yeast rolls specifically.

That actually sounds wonderful. Enjoy spending time with your mom while she can still cook. It makes me sad to think we only have that generation here for just a little bit longer. My grandmother is 90 and I cherish the time I have left with her.

And indeed, while Thanksgiving food prices are up 19% since 2019, according to the AFBF, federal data shows median household wages growing by about 25% during the same period

I missed out on that last part, guess we'll only have nine people this year instead of ten.

Also if you need a turkey or anything today you aren't paying those cheap prices.

Those cheap walmart prices were for frozen turkeys.

Its more than double that for a fresh one.

15 LB Turkey at $.88 a pound $13.20

And eight pounds of that are bones unless you bought lunch meat (which I wouldn’t put past you).

quote:

14 servings green beans, $.50 per 3.5 servings, $2

So a little strip straight out of the can.

quote:

12 Servings Mashed Potatoes $3.57

Instant mashed potatoes. You are such white trash to serve that to your family that you claim to be thankful for.

quote:

12 servings Turkey Stuffing $1.94

Stuffing in a can again.

quote:

10 servings turkey gravy $2.84

You probably serve more turkey gravy than turkey itself.

quote:

12 rolls $1.38

Wow, 1.2 rolls for everyone at the table. So generous!

quote:

11 servings tea $2.98

The cheapest thing known to man.

quote:

10 servings pumpkin pie $9.14

Wow, one pumpkin pie which half the people on the table don’t care for.

I wouldn’t serve this Thanksgiving meal to my dog, but you serve this to your family that you claim to be thankful for. As for the wine, I’m guessing you provide your family Idaho’s finest:

How Awgusta grew up.

I take that back, because at least Eddie would use real tomato ketchup which is more than what Awgusta would provide.

The cost of real dressing:
Corn Meal $2.32
Celery $2.72
Yellow Onion $0.62
Garlic Clove $0.72
Eggs $3.97
Broth x2 $3.96
Stock $2.98
Spices (Let's just say) $5.00

Cost: $22.29 (before taxes) - Now, you have to do the rest with about $30 left in your budget.

You forgot the beef or the oysters, so you’re still not done.

No shite, peanut oil is high and always has been. It is also a disgusting way to cook a turkey, in my opinion.

As opposed to you getting it out of the can, just throwing it into the oven, and it coming out like this:

quote:

I will be frying one though, this year and every year, because my BIL insists on it and we are pretty close friends so he is worth it....but its disgusting.

But you’re fine with feeding your brother in law low grade dog food, he’s just going to have a problem with the turkey itself. Got it!

I wish to hell I could convince my wife to feed everyone for less than $5.

Its a shite take to simply state it is indeed possible to cook a thanksgiving dinner for less than what, $790 a head????

How about I don’t know maybe $20 a head? Maybe have everyone bring a dish like a normal family does and fricking feast? But no, instead I’ll pay as much for a meal as I would for my pig to eat out of a trough just to show my loved ones how much I care about them.

quote:

If YOUR thanksgiving dinner costs more than $5 a person that is a decision YOU made. You are not a victim of anything other than your own desire to feed your friends and family very well on a holiday. Own it. Don't pretend like someone is forcing you to spend more. Stop being a victim of unfounded personal assaults...you will be happier for the experience.

I’m not saying we’re victims, but your family are absolutely victims of what you are feeding them.

turkey, dressing (not stuffing, we are not cretins) mashed potatoes and green beans, bread, gravy and pie. I would bet ANY amount of money that most of you who claim this is an unacceptable thanksgiving day menu will have at least some of these items on your table. Strange that....

Ummm, yes, but my turkey doesn’t come from a can, nor does my green beans, I have like three dozen freshly baked rolls, actual mashed potatoes with garlic instead of powder that you add water, and my dressing costs about thirty bucks at least to produce because I just don’t mix things in that I find in the trash, throw it in the oven, and have the balls to call it dressing. Plus a key lime pie which is more than your white trash tastebuds have ever comprehended.

And all this is for less than $200, you traitor trash cretin.

How can they write this with a straight face? "We are bold-faced lying about inflation, but lazy government workers got a COL raise and worked even less!"
