Texas cuisine is BBQ and BBQ. You would think with as much Gulf coastline they would have lots of seafood but what they do have is prepared it is in Wisconsin
Houston used to be a steak and baked potato town in almost any restaurant but a handful. It was that way when I lived there in the mid 1980's slowly began to change. Brenner's when it was owned by the old German couple who founded it had the best steaks I have ever had anywhere. Not much of a wine list but that wasn't such a thing in Houston back in the day.
Outside of Houston had lots of Ice House burger places with great burgers. I just happen to like hamburgers a lot.
There was plenty of fresh seafood to eat from Kemah on south and along the coast. The same dishes as NOLAs Bucktown restaurants. There was one shack of a place in Seabrook which two young brothers owned. One was a crabber and the other ran the restaurant.

It's hard for me to disagree.

There was a drug dealer in Lake Charles who found religion while in jail. I once told a friend that if he had known how lucrative being a preacher was, he would have never sold drugs.
Not that many years after he started his evangelical church, he had 2 Ferraris in his garage. Then he and his wife divorced so he moved to Austin. His marketing changed too, it went from expensive suits to jeans and casual shirts with tennis shoes.

If you say so
Wonder if that UHaul is still available that brought us here in 1990?

Don’t let living life (Nola Jazz Fest) interfere with your plan! Kidding. Salute!
However, don’t let living life (cardiovascular) interfere with my plan (soul health).
See My Dawlin Nawlins (for beacon).
Good luck in Triathalon!

This is just dumb. No one moves to Texas to make a political statement.
Texas has propped itself up as a safe haven for conservatives from blue states. It’s basically become a poster-boy example of the kind of state that conservatives from all over the country aspire to live in.

Except it's the exact opposite. Texas is moving blue thanks to Cali implants fleeing the shithole their politics created there, and bringing the same politics with them. Have you ever been to Austin? Are you retarded?

I’m not doing that. I’m simply stating the upper middle class lifestyle isn’t that much different.
When’s the last time a kid got murdered at a school in Mandeville?
Personally, I’d much rather send a kid to a catholic school in Laffy/BR/NOLA areas than one of the better public schools in dfw or htx.

This I agree with

quote:I probably would now. The bay area was amazing 70-90's, at least. Visiting now is weird. It seems like the entire original population was swapped out with a new one. The 2 bedroom craftsman I grew up in, in a family neighborhood in Palo Alto, is worth $2.5MM, and every house on the street is childless. I don't know a single person on that street now. The tech boom brought in an a-hole vibe more like NYC than old school CA.
I grew up in the Bay Area. I prefer Texas.

I guess your brand of Catholicism skipped right over the words of the god-man named Jesus about loving one another…

I guess you forgot about the cuisine Texas perfected that is one of the more popular cuisines in America…Tex-mex.

Texas is not turning blue. Texas voted heavily in favor of Republicans in 2024.

The public schools here have been hurt bigly by outward migration of poor people from inner cities. I’d guess that’s true of most states with similar demographics.

a laughable take

People are only moving to Texas for two reasons: cheap living and to make a political statement. That’s it.

quote:This doesn't surprise me. Almost my entire extended family are 'cali transplants' at this point. The few liberals in the family either stayed in CA or moved up to the PNW. My mom's side (Mormon) mostly went to UT, WY, or ID. My dad's side (Southern Baptist) went almost exclusively to Texas.

I've always been dubious of the 'cali transplants' turning texas blue' meme, because in my experience, the liberals stayed in place or moved to other blue areas, while every single transplant I know that moved to TX is conservative (minus a hippie girl I knew in HS that moved to Austin).

The beaches in Galveston are trash. Dallas, Austin, and Houston are basically sprawled out, decentralized cities full of corporate chain restaurants where there is no walkability at all and you have to drive 15-20 minutes just to get to places. All three of those cities feel like they were taken and artificially transplanted in farm country. They have no organic feel at all.
You are 100% correct on this

Not a fan of Houston, Dallas or San Antonio. Been to Houston dozens of times and the other two just a couple of times each, but if I never went back to any of those cities, I'd be fine.
I had a friend who lived on Lake Granberry and I visited him there a couple of times and it was cool, liked it enough.
Let's not even talk about Galveston and that dirty arse water...calling it a beach!!
