Houston Chronicle article

quote:

A Texas teen's extended family is asking the public for help to "Save Sarah," a 17-year-old girl whose parents sent her off to an East Texas boarding facility to "pray the gay away" after she took her girlfriend to prom. Joey Jordan, a University of Texas at San Antonio student, put together a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $39,000 that will go toward legal expenses incurred in the fight to rescue the teen from the facility.

quote:

When Sarah attempted to walk out of the facility shortly after being placed there, staff quickly apprehended her and returned her to the facility, and she was punished for her escape attempt. When close friends of Sarah drove up to the facility in an attempt to free her, local law enforcement threatened to arrest them."

I don't wanna live on this planet anymore....

People start a GoFundMe for literally everything.
Back in 8th grade, I wanted an electronic drumset. The one I wanted was $1000
My parents said hell no. So what did I do? I walked around the neighborhood and asked people if I could cut their grass. And if they liked the job I did, I'd come back the next week. Took me the whole summer. And I saved as much as I could. I bought the drumset and had $200 left over. I learned a lot of valuable lessons along the way that are going to stick with me for the rest of my life. Can't stand people asking for handouts.

There's no saving Sarah... she's doomed to spend eternity in hell with the rest of the homosexes.

Sending kids off to boarding school to "correct" behaviors has been a practice for those who could afford it for many years.

Going to boarding school to correct being gay is a little much though.

Well, she has been released. Or this was a scam.

quote:

We have an important update. We have just been informed that Sarah has been released from the facility. We don't know the details, but we believe that this page, and the willingness of you all to share Sarah's story had a great deal to do with this. We don't yet know what this means for the legal case -- we need to consult with our attorney and, when we are able, with Sarah about how or whether to continue. In the interim, we are not requesting additional donations at this time. As we've previously stated, if the lawsuit terminates, we will use all of the money that you so generously contributed to pay accrued legal bills for our lawyer and Sarah's. If there are any funds left over, they will be placed in a trust for Sarah to help her with life"s next steps so that she can attend college and lead a normal life being who she is and loving whom she chooses.

We are understandably excited by today's developments, and hopeful for what this means for Sarah's ability to live her life as her true self. And we are hopeful that one day soon all the other LBGT teens out there who face rejection by their families and attempts to "fix" their sexuality will be accepted for who they are.

We will update this page when we know more. Thank you again for your generous contributions and kind words for Sarah. We look forward to when we are able to speak to Sarah and share with her all the incredible and inspiring words that you and others have written to her during this traumatic time.

Sincerely,

Sarah's family (extended)

I'm trying to imagine a world if homosexuality was the norm and I was forced to go to a camp to force the hetero out of me. I can imagine that being very psychologically disturbing to anyone but especially a young person.

It's been a thing for a while. Some of these church camps are insane. They are brainwashing centers. Pretty fricked up and abusive if you ask me. If I were a child in that position I would probably disappear and never see my family again after I turned 18.

I don't blame the losers who start these go fund me accounts as much as the losers who give donations.

Need money to help pay the medical expenses for a 3 year old with Leukemia? Absolutely.

Need $100k to rescue a some kid I don't know from Vacation Bible School? Get the frick out of here!

Idk if you're being sarcastic, but for 99% of the ones below the age of 25, it absolutely is
