Chronicle article
quote:
The whole thing started with a fight at the Bustin' Loose nightclub. It was a late night, with lots of booze - and whispers of another man involved.
When it was all said and done, Marquetta George ended up dead and bloodied on the side of the road. Eighteen years later, on Thursday night, her former boyfriend Daniel Acker was put to death for her murder.
quote:
The Sulphur Springs man was convicted of strangling his 32-year-old girlfriend and pushing her from a moving car, according to court records. But for years, Acker and his defense team have argued that he didn't kill George and that her death was an accident after she jumped out of a moving car.

I can only imagine how trashy a nightclub in Sulphur Springs is.

"Other states are abolishing the death penalty. My state's putting in an express lane."

Am I the only one who read this article and thought that the conviction seemed a little flimsy?
The state never definitively determined the cause of death. They say it might have beeen strangulation or it could have been blunt force trauma. He says she jumped out, and he flagged down the cops immediately.
I dunno. I’m no lawyer but I’m not understanding how you get first degree murder and the death penalty out of this.

That’s tough. There’s some doubt there.

Texas is how. It does look somewhat flimsy.
Also, this caught my eye:
