I’m dreading the start of the school year primarily because of meal planning and grocery shopping. It dominates our Sunday, and I would love to use a delivery service for convenience. It’s hard to figure out a few things though:

1) While there’s a membership fee and tip to worry about, do they also mark up the prices on everything? How much more are you really paying for a delivery service vs. going to the store yourself?

2) How often do you get bad produce delivered? We stopped using Walmart’s pickup service because the shoppers apparently didn’t give a shite about what they were purchasing.

Oh and since this is the OT, please ask the missus for these answers.

Time is money.

Sometimes produce may be a little lacking, but that's usually because all of that item isn't good at the time. I've had the shoppers at both Walmart and through Instacart message me when an item doesn't look good. They send pictures from time to time. My biggest issue is usually green onions.

I ordered on Friday and the shopper messaged me that they only had one milk that expired on the 10th. The rest expired on the 5th. I'd ordered 2 half gallons. She asked if the 5th was okay.

We get all but fresh meats, eggs, and fresh vegetables delivered. My GI problems include a need to cook to death all veggies as well as several popular ones (I can only tolerate about 1 sandwich worth of lettuce for example) so we get frozen instead.

They are “out of inventory” a lot because they can only allocate so much for delivery is my only issue.

We used to do it all the time. It was primarily Instacart, but haven’t in a couple of years, and have never used Wal-Mart, but their service has us tempted to start again.

The biggest problem I had was the actual delivery. It might sound odd, but it felt like we wasted a lot of time waiting around for the delivery, even when the estimated time was a tight window and accurate.

I just started with delivery. We order most things except produce. I meal plan and plan for shortages/missing/out of stock items. Today’s order was missing a door mirror for the boy and cheese. Effortless to get a refund but I’m wary how long that will last. I tip but not like a dinner tip. It’s still a learning process but I like my time that I don’t spend going to pick up. ETA: Walmart also, we live on a dead end and my porch is shady and not expose to view from street. I’m not worried if it’s left at the door if I don’t have anything that needs refrigeration.

I could see this being an issue, but at least I would be home taking care of other things or enjoying myself. I guess the biggest issue could be the delivery being cancelled.

We have had WM+ in home delivery for a year. It’s great. They at least try to put everything away

I only order when I'm going to be there to receive it. Also, on the apps, you know when the shopper starts shopping, when they check out and when they're on the way to deliver.

I think the only time I've ever had an order delayed was during Covid during the Christmas holidays. They were getting slammed and my order came the next day.

just like any of these services, ask the first one who's worth a damn if they're open to working off the books. they get more $ and you have someone who does better shopping. win win

Somebody could make a lot of money doing this, if they went above and beyond.

We have slowly gotten to where we use Instacart for our groceries nearly 100% of the time now. Yes it is more expensive than going and buying them yourself but the convenience is worth the price.

I have figured out that the quality of shoppers correlates to the quality of store. I guess the shoppers are only shopping where they are used to. If we order from Albertsons or Rouses the orders typically (not always) come later than estimated, or the bags smell like cigarettes, or the produce looks like shite. If we order from Target or Aldi it gets to us way faster and with way less issues.

Speaking of Aldi, we started getting groceries delivered from there and I can get a weeks worth of groceries for my family delivered cheaper than if I went to Albertsons and bought them in person.

Biggest issues are

1) they won’t select for good produce, and

2) those lazy fricks will claim the item is “not in inventory” because they don’t want to go find it

Happens often enough that I try not to use it

Nobody has answered #1.

Typically, how much more are you paying than if you picked them up yourself?
