Just under six months after announcing its Solar Roof, Tesla has finally put a price tag on those eco-friendly solar tiles that look like the real thing — and they're actually really affordable.

Orders are now being taken for the Tesla Solar Roof at a price of $21.85 per square foot, which is nearly 20 percent less than the cost of a normal roof — even without factoring in the energy savings.

Back in November, Consumer Reports projected that the Tesla solar tiles would need to come in at $24.50 per square foot in order to compete with traditional roofing materials, something Tesla CEO Elon Musk was able to handily deliver — and then some.

Tesla's Solar Roof tiles are made of glass over a photovoltaic substrate as a replacement for traditional roofing materials — not an aftermarket add-on to the roof line, so they actually look like the 'real thing" from the ground, allaying previous aesthetic hurdles to solar panel adoption (much like Tesla already has already done for the electric car).

What are they considering 'normal roof'? Materials for architectural shingles can be purchased for around $1 per square foot.

I welcome any advancements made in solar panels, cars, etc., but this is pretty misleading. The costs of these solar tiles may be in line with some of the more premium roofing materials, but certainly not with an average asphalt roof.

Still, these products keep going down in price and we should all be happy about that.

Stupid article is stupid. The person downvoting comments to that effect is even dumber.

Even premium roofing materials like slate is going to be less than $1500 per square. This stuff is much more than that. Perhaps whoever wrote this article couldn't covert sf to sq...

How long before the writer of this article realizes their mistake and issues a correction?

My roof in DFW cost $8800 for roughly 2500-2600 square feet. The solar roofing would cost $56000...

Thats ridiculous. A 60x40 flat roof would cost over $50,000. Add in a pitch and you probably approaching $70,000 for the roof. You get roughly $21000 tax savings. How long will it take to get that 50k in savings? They must be catering to sheikhs in Saudi. Come on Tesla, we need a homemade sun installed in our homes. Not some stupid glass roof.

They must mean a normal roof with solar panels. Big difference.

I'm somewhat knowledgeable about this topic, but certainly no expert, and I couldn't think of any material that costs more than $2200 a square... But there may be something.

Some of the comments from the link mention that Tesla is comparing their roof tiles to premium stone tiles in the California market. So, if that is the case, maybe, just maybe, they are ever so slightly cheaper.

However, you have to also purchase the Tesla inverter at $6,500 (plus installation), however many Powerwalls you want at about $8,000 each (plus installation), and you have to use their special roofers/electricians to install the roof tiles. I wouldn't be surprised to find $15,000 or more in extras when it is all said and done.

Furthermore, just how much of this "cheaper" price is because of government handouts that Tesla is receiving? What would these solar tiles cost on the regular market?

Keep lowering the costs of solar power is a great thing.

There was a guy who posted in by neighborhood Facebook page who apparently went the whole way in terms of getting quotes, etc. The price ij the OP above I think is misleading. That might be the SQft price you can get if you're building new.

If you're trying to retrofit, you have the added cost of redoing the electric wiring/power grid for the home, you'll probably have to reinforce the roof with new support given the tiles are heavier.
