At 5k per week that is over two years for delivery for the last person on the list.
Not everyone on the preorder list wants the LR premium edition model 3. They’ve already gone through a little over 40K people that wanted that version, there’s probably about another 50-100K that want that version as well. More than half of the 500k wanted the standard battery version so this invite batch doesn’t mean anything to them, they’re still sitting on the sidelines impatiently waiting for a car that still doesn’t exist.
If Tesla can keep up their pace, which I think is going to be tough, they’ll clear out the premium model 3 preorders around October/November and then they’ll almost be forced to offer the lower end model 3. I wouldn’t be surprised if around that time you see the model Y get unveiled and a new batch of preorder deposit invites to raise some capital because the base version of the model 3 is going to be a very weak income generator and they need cash. if Elon goes and asks Wall Street for more money it’s going to blow up in his face since he insisted that Tesla will finally be making money by Q3 and will have plenty of cash on hand.

Has it been pointed out that interns are building these cars?

Your car may get delivered but it also might have been put together by a kid that has never touched a screw driver in his life.

Just a bit OT but, after hours and sort of Father's Day-ish.
My kid has been working the GA4 line. I won't reveal much since I think that's prudent.
But some color:
Prob sweetest/nerdiest of my 3 kids. Also, most accident prone.
Brilliant. Got fancy-school post grad quant degree in one year, now on way to PhD studies and stopped off at Tesla for the summer to work with other nerds on Tesla technology.
3 weeks in, he gets a late night text from boss: "report to factory tomorrow morning" with just map dot coordinates and a phone # (really).
Arrives with other nerds and no idea what's up and is handed a voucher to go down the road for a pair of Red Wings.
Then returns and is directed into the GA4 tent and shown the line and where to be and what to do.
It's very clear that this is all-hands on deck. Anyone who can be spared is here to help. It's hard work, possibly the first physical work-for-pay of this sheltered life. On GA4, there's a gallimaufry of backgrounds, education and skills all cranking hard. But also a "see one, do one, teach one" approach where people are coming in, taking over, forming the cartilage of the line and teams that become the next shift.
I hear these things too:
" -- Robots don't get sore shoulders.
-- I look down the line a bit and there's Elon, torquing bolts.
-- I come in the next morning and engineering has completely reconstructed how a whole section works. It's faster.
-- Yes, I'm now very glad I went to college but I also have a new frame of reference for when I think 'that is not do-able'. This GA4 thing is incredible, chaotic and ramping. "

The tent production line is amazing. They pulled that together in a few weeks.

Lol, I mean ok, but this:

So yeah, they are being put together by interns with Post Graduate degrees working on PhDs.
I mean, is that supposed to be a dig at Tesla? Because you have no idea what this guy does. It could be something very simple like a quality control check. And its not like you need even a bachelors to work on most manufacturing lines.

Elon needs to forget about cars and start focusing on creating the real Westworld.

I'm laughing at you thinking your car was built by a master mechanic or something. Whatever make you've got, if it was built in the last 5 years, chances are half of it was assembled by temps. At least half, maybe more.
