You are correct. The poster said "insurance cost will soar" and a guy replied "why". The way I see it, is insurance will drop but the car prices will increase as you correctly stated.

Your car would be an asset if you participate in the taxi share program.

Look at you gobbling up Musk's hyperbole. Have fun when you get your car back after a person puked all over the floor for the low low price of a $5 ride.

It's really not far fetched. We already do ride sharing.

And there's a significant fee if you vomit in one right now.

Once this thing goes live, the biggest point that I don't think anyone in this thread has mentioned, is that the cars will be able to communicate with each other.

This. One day (I don’t think anyone really knows how soon) autonomous cars will become the norm, and it will mean we navigate traffic MUCH more efficiently and safely.

But like you said.. the in-between time will be rough. Other drivers are the biggest variable, and it will be interesting to see how autonomous vehicles handle defensive driving when they aren’t the majority.

Also I doubt that it’s realistic to have no steering wheel in the short term. I could be underestimating the technology but it seems like there will be huge infrastructure needs before that can happen. My neighborhood doesn’t have lines on the road, and people occasionally park on the side of the road. I don’t see how an AI will be able to efficiently figure out when to stop behind the car in front of me vs. when to go around it in the “wrong” lane, or how it’s going to reliably pull into my driveway just right every time. But again maybe I’m underestimating it.

Also this is why I think Musk’s vision of starting with long-haul trucking makes so much sense. Pre-designated routes on the interstate, relatively uniform signage and markings, etc.

So, let me make sure I understand your utopia. Zero traffic jams, zero accidents and my car will be paid for by strangers who borrow it?

So if it goes haywire, there is no option to override it?

That’s scary.

Death does that naturally for you.

I've driven a few of the new Acuras with the lane departure feature. It will steer you back in to the lane if you get too close to the edge. It only works for about 30 seconds and then the wheel starts shaking and the system will turn off with no steering input. You can get a lot of texting done in that 30 seconds while George is driving for you though. I'd be very happy with a fully autonomous car on the interstates only. So much time wasted driving in a straight line....

Significantly less traffic accidents and deaths, significantly increased efficiency due to lack of most traffic jams, and the option to partially own a vehicle for the time you actually use it.

None of that is far fetched or utopian in any way.

At first you said this.

quote:

There wont be bumper to bumper traffic in a fully automated commute.

Now, it is this

Significantly less traffic accidents and deaths,

At this rate by tomorrow they will just be cool.

Now get back to the jetsons.

There won't be bumper to bumper traffic regularly as we know it.

The cars wont be able to automatically remove crashes if something happens.

But it wont be regular rush hour traffic because the cars will work together to use proper zipper merging that would be most efficient now, but people are stupid. And itll happen at a higher rate of speed than we can attain.

This will mostly be true on highways.

City traffic patterns will need to be adapted for efficency.

Can you program it to go slowly in the passing lane and not use the blinkers? Cause that’s the only way some people know how to drive.

Got back from Australia a few months ago, while we were there, Uncle Sam supplied us with a couple of LC 70's with turbo diesel V8's. Sweet doesn't begin to describe that engine.

It's like Uber doesn't exist and Taxis haven't existed for decades and decades.

If you don't understand how automated vehicles are much different than taxis and uber, it's not even worth engaging into a conversation with you.
