Will you need a drivers license for one of these?
You aren't driving.

A car without a steering wheel will not work for personal use, period. Only for some specific commercial uses in an urban / suburban area would it be feasible.

They may be safer later, but for now it has to drive with humans around it. Ppl will smash into this thing because it follows all the rules, and people follow next to zero rules. Our anticipation on the road is based on human behavior, this thing doesnt act that way. It's already happened to Google self driving cars. one example

I will gladly take three weeks of not having to drive an hour and a half to work in this gosh damn Baton Rouge traffic. Idgaf if it ends in a dunk in a bayou. That three weeks will be some of the least stressed, most productive days of my life.

What's the point of the side mirrors?

So the driverless computer controlled car knows when to pull into the left lane to aggravate everyone.

Also, how are these going to prevent running over Brayleigh and Layken when they’re on Range ave @ interstate collecting money for travel softball.
Not sure I follow, while the full self driving isn't ready/available now, the car can drive itself right now, today. It'll detect little Brayleigh and Layken like it does now.

It'll also detect little Brayleigh and Layken a hell of a lot better than the average human driver, so there's that too.

I don't get the appeal of this automated driving stuff.
I get it, and some folks just really like driving themselves, and there's nothing wrong with that.

It comes in most handy in those bumper to bumper interstate type traffic days. Leaving work on a trip that may normally take 20 minutes on a Saturday afternoon but take 60 minutes and is just nothing but stop and go. It's hard to explain, but having the car do all of the steering and most importantly all of the accelerating/braking is really a benefit. I don't really consider it tiring or any fatigue to make a drive like that in traffic, I guess because it's just something we've always done. But to not have to make what amounts to probably hundreds or more of little microdecisions every couple of seconds for 60 minutes of a drive while your car does it for you, I can honestly say you just arrive at your destination feeling a bit better, a bit more refreshed.

I can't imagine literally not even having to look at the road or anything like that. I don't think we're anywhere near 1-2 years away like Musk says. But like he also said, his most fair criticism is he's not always on time, but he generally always does what he says, and this will get there as well, and with Tesla likely leading the way mainly just because they're so far out in front at the moment on this one.

In 3 more years after that introduction, Tesla will announce the cessation of the car with no steering wheel program.

If it's anything like the $35k Tesla, it'll be more like 3 weeks.

While true and these are concerns, this IMO is only proof that we need to get more of these and less people on the roads as quickly as possible.

Nah. The freedom lost to do whatever the frick you want is too high a price for me.

I'm all for abolishing driver's licenses altogether.

But I'm weird and all libertarian like that.

I'm probably totally contradicting myself here, but I can't stand being a passenger in a car and prefer driving...but I also would prefer a utopian driving society where no one, myself included, ever had to drive and it was all completely autonomous.

Great point. How can you swerve if an arse comes into your lane?
