re: Tesla owners run into battery charging trouble in Chicago's bitter cold

Man, saving the planet comes at a real cost. Hopefully it doesn’t one day come at the cost to human life in freezing the death.
If I had shelled out the bank roll it takes to buy a Tesla, and had to have my car towed because I couldn’t simply charge it to get to my destination like a person in a normal vehicle, I have to imagine that I would be kicking myself at some point in time for being duped into buying that thing. I don’t think I’d be feeling too good about myself after that.

Oh shucks. And I was convinced this was "smart".

I tend to rely on my past experiences and knowledge when making decisions until proven otherwise. As a kid, my friends and I desired high-end remote control cars. We envied those with gas RC cars, as they could play all day without waiting for batteries to charge. If gas power was better for toy cars, it seems like common sense that it would be superior for full-size cars.

Not clear to me whether it was a charger issue or a battery issue....
Is the battery too cold to accept a charge or is the charger too cold to provide one (for whatever reason)?
Or both...
Regardless, it shows the shortcomings of the current technology that this administration continues to ignore....

Iced next to a guy in Iowa with a n EV and a hybrid. EV ranged dropped to 30 miles in winter. Said he’d never buy an EV again. One reason Toyota has pushed back on legislation cali for EV.
Hybrid is the way to go

Ok then I’m wrong. But in South Dakota more people had block heaters than those that didn’t. I guess they are idiots.
Block heaters are just conveniences like heated seats. They just make your engine warm up faster to get heat faster since they keep the coolant warm. Up north they are options and down south they are not. Its about what can sell but its a luxury item not a cold weather requirement.

Yes I understand the situation with block heaters. When it got below say 5 degrees Fahrenheit all the mechanics recommended them. I seen crap what happens to motor oil below say 5 degrees.

I bet you can get that car running again in 2 hours. Tesla will be there for you… in 2 weeks!

Where the hell are you getting a car battery for $100?
Was about to post the same thing.

Did you know that regular car starter batteries also die in extreme cold?
You're better than this.

It’s mostly the former.
Teslas will attempt to precondition (warm) the battery up if your destination is a Supercharger, but it seems like a combination of people arriving with ice cold batteries that wouldn’t charge (because they did not precondition) and people arriving with warm batteries that got cold while waiting as Superchargers attempted to warm the batteries of the first group.
Volume might have been some of it, but even the busiest Supercharger might charge you at only half the rate it’s capable of. It definitely shouldn’t take hours.
Key takeaway here is if you own an EV, pay attention to the weather and plan ahead. Don’t let your SOC get so low that you can’t get to an alternative or home.

Ive long thought the only way electric vehicles make any sense is if you have a garage with a charger and also have a second car that is ICE powered for longer trips. It would be nice to rarely go to gas stations.
This is the best way to go.

Now I guess you need a heated garage or maybe just drive the ICE vehicle on the coldest days. I guess you could get a kerosene heater for the garage and use it on the coldest days.
I guess if you live somewhere that’s absolutely frigid, but it got down to 12 last night and the garage was about 48 this morning. IMO, anything above 20 and you’re fine (in terms of the battery). Below that for long periods and it seems to get weird (in terms of charging, acceleration and braking).

I really want to like EV and have considered a model 3. The hanging around waiting for a charge on the coldest days is enough to push me into the ‘EV is not an option’ camp.
Yeah, I’ve been a M3 owner for 4 years and I can say that you definitely don’t want Supercharging to be your primary option. Some people do it but I wouldn’t. They’re great most of the time but I operate in a way that I minimize my need for them.
Similarly, you can charge from a normal wall outlet…I did this for a month and also wouldn’t recommend that as a primary way to charge.
