The more you know...

quote:

The alates, or reproductive versions of the termite, have wings that allow them to fly up to about 300 yards from the nest. They stay inside the nest until the wings are fully developed, and then wait for perfect conditions to launch from the ground, from nests in trees, or in building walls.

The Formosan termite is an invasive species, imported by accident from several locations in the Far East when soldiers and sailors returned home from World War II.

In New Orleans, they established themselves quickly when packing material infested with the termites was buried at an Army facility along the lakefront, and when similar materials were stored at Navy facilities in Algiers.

Since then, they've reproduced rapidly, overcoming older pesticides in establishing nests in buildings, and also infesting may live oaks throughout the city. The termites also have been found in Lake Charles, south Florida, and are spreading elsewhere throughout the United States.

Southwest Louisiana two nights ago. Like a Biblical plague. Worst I'd ever seen them.

Was hanging out with a friend the other night in mid city BR. We were outside with the light on. Things were fine. Went behind the shed to piss and when I came back they were everywhere.

They were terrible at the Fly. The Carrolton baseball fields were completely covered in swarms.

Not bad in Gretna, but it was a couple of nights ago. This year it hasn't been overwhelming at any one time, but it's been more consistent. I hate this crap.

You know, for as much as you all brag about not having to deal with winter, you sure have to deal with a lot of other shite

Earlier this week before I realized the swarm was moving in I left the backdoor open in the late afternoon because it was nice out. Big fricking mistake.
