yes, double stacks hold more ammo and are more reliable...
But I liked being cocked, locked and ready to rock while some thug is waving his gun aroun.

$1000 will get you any ruger and almost any smith and Wesson. Both are considered top notch self defense revolver manufactures.
If you get a revolver, get a full size gun chambered in .357 magnum. If you think you'll ever conceal carry, get a glock.
Either way, take some classes and learn how to safely use it.

If I was concerned enough about defending myself against people to carry a gun for that purpose, it would be a glock 19, concealed.

I have a few but my favorite is a my big old tank of a handgun. Ruger P89 9mm. Never had one problem with it. Love it.

Supposedly one of the most dangerous guns to be shot with because of the way the bullet just bounces around inside the target. I don't know if this is true or just urban legend.

Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm without a doubt

Nah. All I own is revolvers.
