re: Tell me about living in St. Francisville

I love it and have relatives there. With that being said, a buddy that moved there a few years back said would not do it again due to his stage in life (age of his kids). Middle school kids were back and forth to Baton Rouge constantly (dance, gymnastics, etc) and teenage son was always in Baton Rouge doing "big city" things. He also said there was a lack of affordable "middle class" housing for younger people.
I told him the things he was bitching about is actually the appeal of St Francisville. The old money does not want it to be Zachary/Central for a reason.

Yeah I mean I get it if people aren't educated and don't know the public school system climate here in Louisiana. But if you're ranking ahead of Livingston, asecension, and Zachary or in the mix that means it's a top public school system in the state. I was just trying to relay some info to the OP

For around 250 to 325k you can get a nice house with a decent yard.
You are correct about the old money not wanting it to become a Zachary or central. However they are getting a burger king and pizza hut soon lol. I guess that's progress.
It's not for everyone. If you want to escape city life. Get the kids away from technology. Teach them old school skills like hunting, fishing, wood working, etc then this is the place to be. If you're needs are to be 10min from a mall, Chucky cheese, and a place like Perkins Rowe then obviously st. Francisville isn't for you.

Have a cousin who lives there.
She says the area is haunted, not just the Myrtle.

There is a sonic.
When I was a kid, my friends' grandparents had 1,200 acres of amazing land just north of town. Fun times.

what is the school situation there? Public? Private
The public school as far as rankings is up there with state public schools as far as academics and sports but the people that run it will bend over backwards to hide any negative issues in the school. Some private school options in the area. Wilkinson Co Christian Academy is about 30 miles to the north. Also have Silliman Academy in Clinton and even Centerville Academy in Amite County.
quote:define redneck. If you're talking white trash meth heads, then you'll rarely see them. They either keep to themselves in Tunica or they come into town from Jackson across the parish line in East Feliciana. Generally the kids that grow up there leave to get degrees and never come back. Lots of Exxon and plant operators commute
where does it fall on the redneck scale?
quote:
-is there a good local food scene? What about things to do with kids?
Not much as far as restaurants. 2 or 3 decent places, a pizza joint and some fast food. Also the restaurant at The Bluffs and can always jump across the river to New Roads for other options
As far as kids go, it really lacks. There is a really nice sports park facility. Basketball and tennis courts, baseball fields, skate park, archery and hiking/biking trails.
quote:
anything else? -would it be worth the drive to take the family there for a day? What is there to do on a day trip?
For a small rural parish, you get a lot from public services. A brand new hospital is about to open, the fire district consistently ranks in the top, some public water issues in the Tunica area but you don't hear very many complaints about what people's tax money pay for.
On a day trip you can maybe visit some of the historical homes. Oakley Plantation is pretty cool. There are a few festivals and such every year but nothing big.
Not sure what you'd like to do as far as but a home or property and build. A new development was just zoned about 4-5 miles outside of town. Will be sold in acres and not lots. Not sure what it will be priced at.

We thought about moving there. But everything was two or three times further away from BR than people that lived there were telling us. I just didn't want to be in a car that much.
It is really nice there though. Hard to find anything decent to buy because of limited housing inventory. They are proud of any land you would want to buy to build. Lots of it. The owners just sell a little at a time to maximize value.
The Bluffs is way too far. It isn't even in St Francisville.

Maybe as the crow flies. But, time-wise it isn't. Little roads that you cannot go very fast on.

Small town atmosphere, no traffic jams, quiet (iow, sidewalks roll up at about 8PM). Low crime rate, good fire protection, internet but check w/future neighbors re reliability if you look at a place a few miles outside town, there are a few dead/weak spots.
It has pretty much everything you need for daily life. Anything else, you can find about 20-25 minutes away in New Roads or Zachary. Yeah, the drive is a drawback, but only if you prefer fighting 10 minutes in bumper to bumper (or sitting idle in a BR traffic jam every time it rains, and often when it doesn't) over 20-30 minutes in free-flowing traffic.
Besides, after a time you learn to keep a list of things you need from Baton Rouge and get it all in one trip
Sports park, Kayak rentals, plenty of hunting, fishing, golf, no movie theaters, 1 seafood/steak restaurant, plus Lebanese, Mexican place, Pizza, Chinese, and The Magnolia (great sandwich shop with music on weekends), plus some fast food places (Sonic, McD's, Church's, Burger King being constructed).
Usually some kind of festival on holidays and throughout the year.
Dance/gymnastics/Karate facilities & teachers
2 bookstores, 1 florist, 1 true drugstore, Sonic, McD's, building supply/hardware, car dealership, 3 banks, Burger King being built, 1 large grocery, 1 small grocery, antique/specialty shops & B&Bs, lots of Churches ... and 3 actual you-gotta-stop-until-it-turns-green traffic lights.
No nightclubs, couple of bars.
And ..... NO Walmart! But there is one about 20 min away in New Roads or Zachary, if you must
Schools (public) are highly rated (considering they're public schools. There are private schools with bus service in Woodville and Centerville, MS.
A lot of the kids go on to college and don't come back, but plenty of them do come back and open their own businesses, etc.
eta: Lots of bike riders on the weekends, so you have to watch out for them on the backroads.

I have lived here my entire life and what FelicianaTigerFan and TattleTiger said were pretty spot on. Small town politics and BS but it also isn't BR. Schools are top 3 public schools in the state for as long as I can remember.
